Intel Decides to Unlock the Memory Mutiplier of its Core i7-920 and Core i7-940 CPUs

| Thanks to some inside information that was published today by various hardware portals, now we know that Intel has decided to enhance the overclocking capabilities of two of its still to be released non-Extreme Core i7 processors. Intel's LGA 1366 Core i7-940 and Core i7-920, which are clocked at 2.93GHz and 2.66GHz respectively will now boast unlocked memory controlers, meaning that users will be able to change the memory multiplier and thus the memory frequency beyond the stock DDR3 800/1066MHz speed. The unlocked memory multiplier will also allow the QPI speed to be changed. The Quick Path Interconnect (QPI) bus resembles AMD's Hypertransport bus. A slide change in the memory frequency will result in higher QPI bus speed, just like in the current AMD processor family. Previously, we knew that only the Core i7 Extreme processors like the 3.2GHz Core i7-965 Extreme Edition will have these overclocking features. I sincerely hope that with this last minute change Intel will make us overclockers really happy. |

Einoh, kui see tavaline 2,66 GHz ja ca 4k maksev prose teeks õhuga 4Ghz, siis pole ju mingit kahtlust, mida järgmiseks masinasse osta  Clock versus clock peaks see loom ju C2Duost selgelt kiirem olema, kui nüüd veel Q9650-ga samale kellale läheb...no see tundub liigagi hea, et olla tõsi. Aga tõesti, eks aeg annab arutust. Mingist konkreetsest kuupäevast ikkagi pole juttu olnud, et näiteks sel ja sel päeval tohib teste avaldada? Tõesti, praegu on seda segast infi liga palju.

Nehalem 3.2GHz goes up to 4.5GHz on air

We learned that Nehalem 3.2GHz should reach over 4GHz easily, and if you are a really good overclocker, you should hit up to 4.5GHz on air. Of course, for such a task you need a great motherboard.
Furthermore, if you want to go over 5GHz and even 5.2 to 5.3GHz you need to play with LN2 but apparently this is possible and it has been done with demo CPUs. These are some of the numbers you should be reaching once the CPU is out.
Naturally, the Core i7 Extreme edition at 3.2GHz and overvoltage protection removed should be able to reach the highest clocks. It is safe to say that whatever speeds youwe seen on Core 2 Quad 45nm Yorkfield parts, you should be getting with Nehalems or you should at least be within that range.
Looks like overclockers will like this one; but beware, the memory speeds will suck, especially compared with X48 memory scores. |
