We are big fans of quick saves. Quick saves and a real save system were one of our highest requests internally when we started development, and something I personally pushed hard for.
In early April 2012 we had our first "crunch meetup" where we were going through our vertical slice. During this crunch, one issue struck us - Savegames in modern games are a nightmare - especially in a game like Rise of the Triad.
The short version:
Savegames, require the entire "State" of the game to be saved. That means, scripted events, physics, enemies killed, weapons and ammo held, etc.
Back in the day, all of these elements were extremely simple to account for (Doom, Quake, Halflife etc) and were relatively straight forward to save.
However, in modern and very heavy games, it's very hard to save the state of everything accurately, and then rebuild it all as accurately, once you load a save state.
In fact, The Escapist recently wrote a great article called "Why we have Checkpoints", which explains in detail why almost every modern game is using a checkpoint system instead of a save system these days.
When working on Rise of the Triad, we realized that creating a save system was almost impossible. We had long talks with our engineers and our publisher Apogee. We soon realized we had to come up with a solution and a way to work around the issue. Our solution would turn out to be a mix between traditional FPS checkpoints, and doing a Super Mario like "Overworld" where you can pick and choose your checkpoints to load with any character on any difficulty at any time that you find in ROTT currently.
We know that this is far from an ideal solution for many of you - But with our budget, timeframe and manpower, it was the solution we chose.
What can we do about it?
Early next week, I am having a meeting with our coders about save games.
We are going to sit down, and get a conversation going with our contacts at Epic, to find a viable solution to this. Rise of the Triad is very unique, and it will require a lot of work, but we are fully committed to the future of our game, and are going to put a lot of effort into R&D on save games, for possible future patches.

mängisin esimese surma saamiseni. pole sel mängul häda midagi - täpselt selline nagu reklaamiti. kellele vana ROTT meeldis, peaks uus kah meeldima, sest see on gameplay poolest väga sarnane. graafika on veidi aegunud, aga nii väikeselt stuudiolt pole väga palju mõtet tahtagi. kindlasti mängin läbi ja jään nende duke nukemi varianti ootama.
Sain ka lõpuks ära proovida, hommikupoole video ka üleval kus katsetan vana mängu enne ja siis seda uut versiooni.
Lühidalt, noo alguses tundub igati lahe ja hea remake aga siis kui mängid natukene algusest edasi.. koheselt torkab silma mõttetu AI ning terve mäng on ikka kole odav samas ega hind midagi erilist mängul polegi kuid ikkagi veidi selline letdown. Eks pelan nata rohkem veel aga kui alguses mõtlesin, et IGN ja Gametrailersi vennad on segased siis hakkan vaikselt mõistma ise ka, et tegu pole millegi erilisega siiski. _________________ Krüpto
