The EcoGreen F3EG, a higher capacity model from its predecessor the F2EG, features 2TB capacity with 500GB per disk that is capable of storing up to 880 hours of DVD video or 500,000 or more songs in MP3 format. With increased recording density, the EcoGreen F3 drive is more power efficient by supporting a capacity up to 2TB with four disks. "Storage-hungry multimedia professionals, gamers and home PC users continue to increase the amount of video, music, photo and other personal data they store and back-up," said In Cheol Park, vice president, Storage Sales, Samsung Electronics. "The F3EG delivers all the benefits of a low-power drive yet features high performance and is environmentally friendly." The F3EG utilizes Samsung's EcoTriangle technology to provide eco-friendly components, low-power and low-noise operation technology to its ‘EcoGreen' hard drives. Eliminating halogen compound and brominated flame retardant from the PCBA, the new model is produced with eco-friendly materials and meets all the environmental regulations including RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) which is being applied worldwide as well as the European Union. Samsung's new hard drive utilizes its low noise operation technology SilentSeek and NoiseGuard to achieve quiet operation. In addition, with its advanced design and fewer components, the F3EG drive is 40 percent lower in power consumption in idle mode and 10 percent lower in reading/writing mode than competitive drives. The drive received a zero percent failure rate in the unstable voltage environment test. The EcoGreen Series has been selected as the best-in-class in the area of power consumption for two straight years by IDEMA Japan (International Disk Drive Equipment and Materials Association) in the performance comparison test of HDDs. The F3EG incorporates a 3.0 Gb/s SATA interface, Native Command Queuing features and a 16MB/32MB buffer memory. The 3.5" F3EG drive is available in 1.5TB and 2TB capacities in the United States and EU markets with a MSRP of $179.99.

The storage capacity of modern harddrives is starting to get pretty decent, but as we've learn through the years you can never have enough storage space and current 2TB harddrive will soon be replaced by even more spacious models. Even if may see harddrive with up to 3TB capacity this year, Hitachi has much bigger plans for the near future, up to 10TB mechanical drives. That's at least what is possible with Hitachi's evolution of the perpendicular magnetic recording technology where they use a tiny, around 20nm, but powerful beam of light to heat the storage medium while a magnetic head writes the data bits. The technology is called thermally-assisted recording and will be capable of a whopping 2.5 terabit per square inch. Five times the capacity of the densest harddrives of today. In thermally-assisted recording, magnetic grains can be made smaller while still resisting thermal fluctuations at room temperature. As the name suggests, thermally-assisted recording uses a laser to heat up the media while the magnetic head is writing the smaller bits of data. This enables the use of media that is magnetically stable at room temperature with the very small magnetic grains required for high-density storage. Alas there is no concrete information on when the technology will be commercially available, and even if it is expensive they will have to find a successor to perpendicular magnetic recording, which according to the same source will have a hard time reaching even 1 terabit per square inch.

Western Digital has rolled out its first consumer hard drive to feature a third-generation SATA 6Gbps interface in the form of a new 1TB Caviar Black. The 3.5in drive, pictured right and given model number WD1002FAEX, makes use of a rotational speed of 7,200rpm and comes equipped with a 64MB cache - double the size of its SATA 3Gbps predecessor. With a 7,200rpm hard drive unlikely to suffer the bandwidth restrictions of a SATA 3Gbps interface, the upgraded model is likely to offer little in terms of real-world performance benefits - despite the larger cache. Owning the latest tech will cost you a little extra, though. Western Digital's 1TB SATA 6Gbps Caviar Black drive is currently available priced at around £87, making it roughly £15 more than a equivalent-capacity Caviar Black drive with a SATA 3Gbps interface and a smaller cache.

Solid state drives may be the next big thing, but hard drives aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Not until everyone wins the lottery, anyway. Toshiba has this week introduced their newest 2.5" drive, a 600GB unit that marks the company's first SAS self-encrypting enterprise drive. For starters, 600GB is a lot of space for a 2.5" form factor drive, and Toshiba claims that this new MBF family represents the industry's highest-capacity 2.5-inch enterprise-class HDD. It's also the company's first enterprise-class self-encrypting drive (SED), which "demonstrates the successful integration of Toshiba and Fujitsu's HDD business last year and illustrates Toshiba's capability and commitment to building further leadership in the enterprise market." If you're concerned over performance, you probably shouldn't be. This one is capable of a 10,025 rpm spin speed and a 6Gb/sec SAS interface for use in volume servers, mainstream storage arrays, blade and rack-mount servers and other business-critical, power-conscious, data-intensive applications. The MBF line also reduces power consumption up to 28 percent, using a new enhanced power condition state, which enables the HDD to spin at a lower RPM when not in use. Exact pricing has yet to be mentioned, but if the 600GB model is too expensive come April, a 300GB and 450GB model will also be made available.
