Seagate launches 640GB notebook drive
http://www.techspot.com/news/37503-seagate-launches-640gb-notebook-drive.html
| tsitaat: |
Seagate pushed out a new device in the Momentus line today, introducing a 2.5" 640GB drive. Aimed at notebooks
that need mass amounts of storage, the 5400RPM drive uses a 2-platter design and sports 8MB of cache, making it at an impressive addition to their mobile storage lineup.
They aren't the first to have a 640GB notebook drive, with Western Digital beating them to the punch by several months. Both drives have comparable specifications, so there's nothing spectacular about Seagate's release. We can expect the Momentus 5400.7 to sell for around $120, comparable to the Western Digital Blue Scorpio.
These two vendors are now the only ones to offer 640GB 2.5" drives. Will others move in as well, or instead reach for the loftier goal of 1TB? As demand increases for higher-capacity SSDs, we must wonder if SSDs or traditional disks will be the R&D priority for this year. |
|

Samsung Announces Massive, High-Performance 2 TB Eco-friendly HDDs
http://www.techpowerup.com/114370/Samsung_Announces_Massive_High-Performance_2_TB_Eco-friendly_HDDs.html
Spoiler
| tsitaat: |
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology today announced the F3EG, its new high-performance environmentally-friendly HDD (hard disk drive) for the desktop market. The EcoGreen F3EG, a higher capacity model from its predecessor the F2EG, features 2TB capacity with 500GB per disk that is capable of storing up to 880 hours of DVD video or 500,000 or more songs in MP3 format. With increased recording density, the EcoGreen F3 drive is more power efficient by supporting a capacity up to 2TB with four disks.
"Storage-hungry multimedia professionals, gamers and home PC users continue to increase the amount of video, music, photo and other personal data they store and back-up," said In Cheol Park, vice president, Storage Sales, Samsung Electronics. "The F3EG delivers all the benefits of a low-power drive yet features high performance and is environmentally friendly."
The F3EG utilizes Samsung's EcoTriangle technology to provide eco-friendly components, low-power and low-noise operation technology to its ‘EcoGreen' hard drives.
Eliminating halogen compound and brominated flame retardant from the PCBA, the new model is produced with eco-friendly materials and meets all the environmental regulations including RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) which is being applied worldwide as well as the European Union.
Samsung's new hard drive utilizes its low noise operation technology SilentSeek and NoiseGuard to achieve quiet operation.
In addition, with its advanced design and fewer components, the F3EG drive is 40 percent lower in power consumption in idle mode and 10 percent lower in reading/writing mode than competitive drives. The drive received a zero percent failure rate in the unstable voltage environment test.
The EcoGreen Series has been selected as the best-in-class in the area of power consumption for two straight years by IDEMA Japan (International Disk Drive Equipment and Materials Association) in the performance comparison test of HDDs.
The F3EG incorporates a 3.0 Gb/s SATA interface, Native Command Queuing features and a 16MB/32MB buffer memory. The 3.5" F3EG drive is available in 1.5TB and 2TB capacities in the United States and EU markets with a MSRP of $179.99. |

Hitachi aiming for 10TB drives with hot plates
http://www.nordichardware.com/en/component/content/article/86-storage/196-hitachi-aiming-for-10tb-drives-with-hot-plates.html
Spoiler
| tsitaat: |
The storage capacity of modern harddrives is starting to get pretty decent, but as we've learn through the years you can never have enough storage space and current 2TB harddrive will soon be replaced by even more spacious models. Even if may see harddrive with up to 3TB capacity this year, Hitachi has much bigger plans for the near future, up to 10TB mechanical drives.
That's at least what is possible with Hitachi's evolution of the perpendicular magnetic recording technology where they use a tiny, around 20nm, but powerful beam of light to heat the storage medium while a magnetic head writes the data bits.
The technology is called thermally-assisted recording and will be capable of a whopping 2.5 terabit per square inch. Five times the capacity of the densest harddrives of today.
In thermally-assisted recording, magnetic grains can be made smaller while still resisting thermal fluctuations at room temperature. As the name suggests, thermally-assisted recording uses a laser to heat up the media while the magnetic head is writing the smaller bits of data. This enables the use of media that is magnetically stable at room temperature with the very small magnetic grains required for high-density storage.
Alas there is no concrete information on when the technology will be commercially available, and even if it is expensive they will have to find a successor to perpendicular magnetic recording, which according to the same source will have a hard time reaching even 1 terabit per square inch. |

Alles nüüd announcib kuigi reaalselt on juba eestiski nädal aega juba saada Aga jah, tundub et samsung õppis tegema ka 4 platteriga kettaid ja ei olegi 667gb platterid
Muidugi see hitachi asi võiks kiiremini teoks saada.

Seagate Ships World's Highest-Capacity, Most Reliable SFF Enterprise HDDs
http://www.techpowerup.com/114895/Seagate_Ships_World_s_Highest-Capacity_Most_Reliable_SFF_Enterprise_HDDs.html
Spoiler
| tsitaat: |
Seagate Ships World's Highest-Capacity, Most Reliable Small Form Factor Enterprise Drive: The Savvio 10K.4 Hard Drive Enterprise storage systems can now move to 600GB capacity, 2 million hour MTBF solution Seagate today announced worldwide shipments of its Savvio 10K.4 hard disk drive (HDD), the world's highest-capacity and most reliable 2.5-inch enterprise-class drive. Built for the demands of enterprise servers and to enable new levels of data density in external storage arrays, Savvio 10K.4 doubles the capacity of its nearest competitor to 600GB. It is also the first HDD to achieve an unprecedented 2 million hours Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) reliability rating.
As the industry's only fourth generation, field-proven, 2.5-inch HDD designed for the enterprise, Savvio 10K.4 also features Protection Information for enhanced protection of data-in-flight, a self-encrypting drive (SED) option for the ultimate protection of sensitive data-at-rest and PowerChoice, which allows the Savvio 10K.4 hard drive to deliver improved power savings during idle.
"Our customers face challenging storage needs requiring the most efficient use of space and power while maintaining the highest performance possible," said Howard Shoobe, senior manager, Dell Storage Product Management. "The new 2.5-inch 10K-rpm 600GB capacity point allows a doubling of capacity within the same rack space of current 3.5-inch 15K 600GB drives while increasing overall system-level performance and decreasing power usage."
The combined features of Savvio 10K.4 deliver greater overall value and can reduce the total cost of ownership to IT organizations and administrators eager to optimize their data center's power and performance efficiency. Leveraging the enterprise 2.5-inch small form factor as its platform, Savvio 10K.4 serves as a powerful storage building block when compared to 3.5-inch based systems.
"A transition to 2.5-inch enterprise-class HDDs by server and storage system OEMs is building momentum," said John Rydning, IDC's research director for hard disk drives. "There continues to be nearly insatiable demand for digital content accessed via numerous applications and devices, content that is increasingly delivered from storage systems equipped with high capacity enterprise-class HDDs such as Seagate's Savvio 10K.4." |

Western Digital slips out its first SATA 6Gbps hard drive
http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=22382
Spoiler
| tsitaat: |
Western Digital has rolled out its first consumer hard drive to feature a third-generation SATA 6Gbps interface in the form of a new 1TB Caviar Black.
The 3.5in drive, pictured right and given model number WD1002FAEX, makes use of a rotational speed of 7,200rpm and comes equipped with a 64MB cache - double the size of its SATA 3Gbps predecessor.
With a 7,200rpm hard drive unlikely to suffer the bandwidth restrictions of a SATA 3Gbps interface, the upgraded model is likely to offer little in terms of real-world performance benefits - despite the larger cache.
Owning the latest tech will cost you a little extra, though. Western Digital's 1TB SATA 6Gbps Caviar Black drive is currently available priced at around £87, making it roughly £15 more than a equivalent-capacity Caviar Black drive with a SATA 3Gbps interface and a smaller cache. |

Three New Desktop Hard Drives For 2010
TomsHW
Spoiler
| tsitaat: |
All three hard drive vendors—Hitachi, Samsung and Seagate—came up with powerful drives for the new year. Hitachi stays with its proven five-platter hard drive design and doesn’t deliver the highest throughput or best power efficiency, but it is very robust and quick on I/O. Samsung finally made the next step, and has been shipping the Spinpoint F3 at 1TB capacity. Thanks to its two-platter design, the drive is very conservative with its power consumption. It also establishes new throughput records, achieving more than 150 MB/s. Seagate’s Barracuda XT caused a stir by being the first 6 Gb/s SATA hard drive, offering 600 rather than 300 MB/s potential bandwidth. The XT proves to be a great application drive, with balanced performance and only a few weaknesses in access time.
If you’re looking for the best bang for the buck without the need to go for the 2TB capacity ceiling, Samsung’s Spinpoint F3 is probably the best choice. We’ve already seen prices at the level of other 1TB hard drives, but none of the others would get anywhere close to the F3’s impressive throughput, low power consumption, and temperature results.
Users searching for a pure storage drive can select almost any 1TB or higher hard drive, as long as there are no special requirements. However, enthusiasts should definitely go either for Western Digital’s Caviar Black drive or the new Seagate Barracuda XT at 2TB. WD is slightly faster, while Seagate offers better efficiency and the SATA 6 Gb/s interface, although we recommend not overemphasizing the latter.
Lastly, there's the Hitachi drive, which is competitive, but not cutting edge in terms of performance. However, looking back at the vendor's long history of five-platter drives, Hitachi’s claims regarding the robustness of this implementation are at least believable. If you’re looking for a reasonable drives for business applications (such as NAS), this could be a solid pick--that is, if you don't prioritize Seagate’s impressive five-year warranty. Hitachi and Samsung only offer three years of coverage. |

Toshiba Ups The Ante With 600GB 2.5" Self-Encrypting Hard Drive
http://hothardware.com/News/Toshiba-Ups-The-Ante-With-600GB-25-SelfEncrypting-Hard-Drive/
Spoiler
| tsitaat: |
Solid state drives may be the next big thing, but hard drives aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Not until everyone wins the lottery, anyway. Toshiba has this week introduced their newest 2.5" drive, a 600GB unit that marks the company's first SAS self-encrypting enterprise drive. For starters, 600GB is a lot of space for a 2.5" form factor drive, and Toshiba claims that this new MBF family represents the industry's highest-capacity 2.5-inch enterprise-class HDD.
It's also the company's first enterprise-class self-encrypting drive (SED), which "demonstrates the successful integration of Toshiba and Fujitsu's HDD business last year and illustrates Toshiba's capability and commitment to building further leadership in the enterprise market." If you're concerned over performance, you probably shouldn't be. This one is capable of a 10,025 rpm spin speed and a 6Gb/sec SAS interface for use in volume servers, mainstream storage arrays, blade and rack-mount servers and other business-critical, power-conscious, data-intensive applications.
The MBF line also reduces power consumption up to 28 percent, using a new enhanced power condition state, which enables the HDD to spin at a lower RPM when not in use. Exact pricing has yet to be mentioned, but if the 600GB model is too expensive come April, a 300GB and 450GB model will also be made available. |

Minu jaoks lihtsalt MLC pole ekstreem.Sorry
Kahju, et tootjad SLC ei kasuta.Sellel on mitmeid olulisi eeliseid MLC ees.Paraku kui tootjad ei kasuta siis keegi ei osta ja hinnad jäävad kõrgeks
