No electricity, no heating: On Saturday, 3.1.2026, the Diakonie Hospiz Wannsee had to be evacuated due to the attack on the Berlin power grid: The 13 seriously ill guests of the hospice were taken to the Immanuel Hospital in Berlin-Wannsee. Because the ancestral home of the hospice in Wannsee is being rebuilt, the hospice is currently housed in an interim location in the Domicil retirement home in Fürstenstraße in Zehlendorf. Running time: maximum six hours.
Thomsen waits first. There are no signs of a long-lasting power outage for him. How? Mobile phone and Internet have also failed. In addition, the idea of having to leave his safe environment scares him. No one suspects that the power outage will last another five days at this time.
Two minutes to suffocation
Only when time is slowly running out and the electricity simply does not want to come back, a nurse alerts the fire department. When the rescuers arrive, they get stuck at the property entrance – the heavy roller door cannot be opened without electricity.
At this moment, the Berlin lawyer separates two minutes from the safe suffocation death. This life-threatening situation is being worked up in the new Tagesspiegel podcast “104 Stunden Blackout”. In six episodes, the power outage in the southwest of Berlin is reconstructed.
The rescue operation at Andreas Thomsen in Wannsee is one of a total of 40 cases in which the Berlin fire brigade between 3 and 7. January in Steglitz-Zehlendorf moved out because “one or more patients were dependent on oxygen device”.

The deployment protocol illustrates how serious the situation during the power outage was actually for many people in Steglitz-Zehlendorf. During the blackout, the case of an 83-year-old Zehlendorf woman was reported to be found dead at home by her son.

“In our view, there is no clear evidence that the death of the woman from Zehlendorf is due to the power outage,” a spokesman for the Berlin fire department told the Tagesspiegel podcast “104 Stunden Blackout”. “Since the determination of the cause is not the subject of our work, we cannot give a clear reason that would certainly confirm a direct connection with the multi-day outage.”
Another case is also not linked to the power outage by the authorities. According to a police spokesman, the 89-year-old woman probably crashed on an ice-smooth street seven days before the start of the blackout and then died during the blackout in a Berlin hospital. No further fatalities are known to police.
The fact that most cases turned out smoothly probably also has to do with the use of the Berlin fire department, which rescued ventilator patients in at least 40 cases.
