I was happy to see De Bruyne playing in a better position and he scored the kind of goal he has spoilt us with at Man City. For a while I thought that Belgium would be counter attacking Brazil off the pitch, but there is more to Brazil of course and they came back valiantly from being 0-2 down and were close to equalising on several occasions. Suffice it to say, both teams played wonderful football and there is no doubt in my mind, Belgium should be the favourites in this semi final. They will come weakened to this semi final, as their outstanding wing back T Meunier will be suspended for this match. N Chadli left the quarter final looking not quite fit and he is an injury doubt, I think. Matuidi will be back in contention for France, but I do not take it for granted that he will be preferred to Tolisso. Defender Pavard is a slight doubt, but I expect him to play. France will fear the deadly Belgium counter attacks and the Belgian defence, not always impressive, has to take care of a certain Mbappe, the ultraspeedy French striker. Both to score and I will go on supporting “my” Belgium. -Chris Croatia v England FBINT World Cup > Semi-finals-18 2018-07-11 20:00:00 (This report was created at 2018-07-08 15:01:30) Once again Croatia did not live up to my expectations playing some ordinary football, but once again they defeated their opponents, Russia in this case, after a penalty shoot out. I had expected Croatia to play some improved football after their dull game against Denmark, a game they also won after penalties. Ahead of this semi final I have to state the obvious thing. Croatia are not the top side many wanted them to be and in the ”easy” half of the World Cup draw Croatia have reached this semi final by defeating Denmark and Russia. Can they even field a fit side for this game against England? And if so how many regulars will be left out? It is a good question after seeing quite a few of their players hobbling and suffering in the latter stages of their game vs Russia. Mandzukic one of them, Vrsaljko another and the Mandzukic situation is a case for concern. He is one of their key players and he was forced to play on against Russia although he was clearly suffering. Vrsaljko, injured? and Strinic, their two wing backs, are probably their weakest players. Two things about this England side. When it comes to set pieces and dead ball situations they are the true masters. It is almost like they are a team coached by Tony Pulis. I mean that in a positive way Secondly. Losing to Belgium in the group stage was the smartest mover ever. Instead of facing world class teams like Brazil and France they are playing Sweden and now Croatia. England are playing some solid, rather safe football , every player seems to know his place and they have a great new goalkeeper J Pickford. Sooner or later in the game they will be awarded a free kick, or a corner kick and rest assured the English are likely to take advantage of these situations. I cannot see the Croatian defence being much better than the Swedish defensive line and how many headed goals did England score against Sweden? The two of them and it could have been more. Sterling should also have scored one or two goals, but his way of scoring, or should I say missing, is after open play. England are not as strong as teams like Belgium, Brazil and France and I do not think anyone would object to this statement, but none of these world class teams can match England when it comes to set pieces. I think Croatia will struggle in this semi final. They risk being tired, maybe decimated and they lack real top form. Backing England.
