Is it possible that for once, Mercedes magic button won’t be enough to get a Silver Arrows on pole position? It appears so. FP1 and FP 3 are not great guides for the floodlit sessions (qualifying and the Race) as the track temperatures will be quite a long way apart and how the tyres interact with the tarmac will be different. However what we have seen so far this weekend is that Mercedes do not look to be the quickest car. Ferrari has shown the best one lap speed in the hands of Raikkonen. The long run pace has Verstappen shading it from Bottas and Raikkonen 0.2 – 0.3 off their pace. The Mercedes doesn’t seem to be able to get the same kind of performance from the super soft tyres as Ferrari can. Yes they will deploy their qualifying mode which will narrow the gap but it may not be enough. Ferrari do seem to have closed the power gap and they were quicker in a straight line than Mercedes. Hamilton was forced to change a gearbox after it developed a problem late the Australian GP. That means a 5 place grid penalty for him on Sunday. Ferrari and Red Bull can smell blood and Mercedes do look to be on the back foot. Qualifying will tell the real story but for once it is possible to oppose the Silver Arrows in a Saturday afternoon session. Raikkonen seems to be able to get a bit more out of this year’s Ferrari so far and on a track he likes he looks to be the Ferrari to follow 2 points Kimi Raikkonen to be fastest qualifier @ 4.50 generally available (well from bookmakers who have bothered to price it up) The Match betting just looks too tricky. The margins between many of the team mates are tiny and as usual the bookmakers don’t know how to price matches between drivers from different teams. Next update will be posted a couple of hours before the start of the race. There is a possibility of more grid penalties so best to wait until the morning news.

Bahrain GP - Race Day Update 2018-04-08 00:00:00 (This report was written at 2018-04-08 13:42:57) Yesterday’s qualifying has set up for a good race with the Ferrari’s on the front row with a Mercedes (Bottas) third and a Red Bull (Ricciardo) 4th. Hamilton has struggled all weekend and with a 5 place grid penalty he star back in 9th. Verstappen’s crash has left him stranded back in in 15th. The long runs in free practice showed Red Bull to be fractionally faster than the Mercedes, as they were in Australia with Ferrari about 0.3 slower than Red Bull. The track offers many more overtaking opportunities than Albert Park did so faster cars that are out of position should be able to move up the order fairly rapidly. The top three teams are comfortably quicker than the best midfielders and the only thing that could slow Hamilton’s progress is his cars sensitivity to running in dirty air. When the Merc is doing the chasing it can look a fairly ordinary car. Vettel starts form pole position, historically not a good place to start with just three pole sitters winning the last ten Bahrain GP’s. The driver in second position has a better record, winning four but will Raikkonen be allowed to race Vettel? I doubt it, he was sacrificed in Australia in order to undermine Hamilton’s strategy and help Vettel’s. The biggest threat to Vettel may well come from the second row cars of Bottas and Ricciardo. Mercedes are at a bit of a loss to explain their comparative lack of pace compared to Australia, maybe it’s the hotter conditions but they don’t seem to be able to use the tyres as well as the opposition. It would be a surprise if the Ferrari’s had to pit for tyres first but they may have to defend from Bottas if he tries the undercut with an early stop. The undercut is supposed to be very effective here and a two stop race is the quickest at least for the front runner so pit stops are going to be crucial today. Hamilton will start on the more durable soft tyre and he may choose to go for a one stop strategy. The Mercedes looked more comfortable on the soft tyre in any case so a soft – medium 1 stop could move him up the order. I don’t think he will be in the race for a win but a podium isn’t impossible. Vettel is the 1.50 favourite to win which looks very short given the record of the pole driver here. There have to be question marks over how well Bottas will be able look after his tyres compared to Red Bull and Ferrari. Nobody has ever won the Bahrain From outside the top 4 on the grid and that looks very likely to be the case again today. Gasly, Magnussen, Hulkenberg and Ocon are over 1.30 seconds off the front row pace, effectively in a different formula. The odds are the deciding factor and Ricciardo gets the call. The Red Bull’s weakness is straight-line speed and with four straights here it is not ideal for a car which is making up time in the corners. There are a couple of corners here which will suit Riccardo’s late braking style. He is world class when it comes to making late lunges into tight corners and making up places with actual racing. He set the fastest lap in Australia underlining the cars better race pace than qualifying pace and I can see him giving Vettel a race today. The fact that he is nearly twice the odds of Hamilton just doesn’t make sense. 1 point e/w Ricciardo to win the Bahrain GP @ 15.00 with Paddy Power, Betfair 2 points Ricciardo to beat Lewis Hamilton @ 2.07 with Sportingbet One of the stars in Melbourne were the two Hass drivers who were heading for a double top 6 finish before the trouble with the wheel nuts brought their race to a sad end. It did show that they are just about the 4th best car on the grid although Toro Rosso have made a big step forward in the two weeks between races, bringing a new aero update and getting Gasly into the top 6 on the grid. His team mate, Brandon Hartley only made 11th, just missing the Q3 cut but he will have a free call on which tyre to start the race and may opt for a more durable compound and attempt the longer first stint and make up places on strategy. Certainly the car has the pace but stakes have to be small as the Honda power unit can’t be fully trusted yet. 1 point Hartley to finish in the top 10 @ 3.00 with Hills, Skybet, Betstars Force India changed their new front wing to an older spec which seems to have helped their pace. Ocon was the 2nd fastest through the speed trap and starts the on the grid. He is a very talented driver who knows how to bring the car home with as many points as it is possible to get. Starting 8th he could pick up a couple of place and at the odds he looks a bit of value to stick in and get 6th. 1 point Ocon to finish in the top 6 @ 7.50 with Betstars Down at the back of the grid we have a Williams. The only team to build a slower car than the one they had last year. It is slow on the straights, slow through the corners, unbalanced and poor under braking. ‘undriveable’ was the call by Stroll who has the dishonour of starting last. They are in a fight with Sauber to see who is has slowest car on the grid. Sauber start 19th with Leclerc and 17th with the more experienced Ericsson. Leclerc is struggling to get used to how a F1 car behaves and Ericsson had the edge yesterday. They are still learning to develop their new car which does look to have some potential while Williams are in a state of chaos with two young drivers who are not equipped to deal with all their cars weaknesses. 2 points Ericsson to beat Sirotkin @ 2.17 with Marathon Bet
