Mexican Grand Prix - Preview 2017-10-29 00:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-10-26 15:01:28) The US GP was a disappointing race from a betting point of view. It’s annoying when you back the right driver at great odds and then they get clobbered by grid penalties or the car breaks down. Verstappen had the pace to win the race but had to start 17th. Crossing the line to finish 3rd was a fantastic performance and in true F1 fashion the powers that be had to spoil the fun by giving him a penalty for over overtaking a Ferrari near the end of a race. Kimi Raikkonen wasn’t complaining but the fun Hoovers in the steward’s room had to have their say, applying a penalty when no other similar ‘offence’ was punished during the race. Hamilton won the race but Vettel kept his ultra slim hopes of the title alive by finishing second after Raikkonen let him past. He will need a win and a bad race for Hamilton to take it to Brazil and he may well get it. If we look at qualifying, Mercedes strongest area, they have only failed to be on pole position in Russia, Monaco, Hungary and Singapore, all high/maximum downforce circuits. When Mercedes have failed to get pole, Ferrari have taken their place with three poles for Vettel and one for Raikkonen. Red Bull is useful on the high downforce tracks and with the midseason upgrades making them competitive over a race distance and now with a new PU which includes 2018 development parts in Verstappen’s power unit, he may threaten. Ricciardo is expecting grid penalties for the next three races and will be starting near the back. The Mexico City circuit doesn’t look like a maximum downforce circuit with its long straights but it is a result of being at altitude, 2250 metres above sea level. The air is thin and the teams need to whack on as much downforce as possible to help them manage the corners. So it’s not a typical max downforce circuit put it requires a maximum downforce set up in order to keep the cars on the track. The thin air at altitude also impacts on the power units, the turbo has to spin much faster in order to produce the same boost levels. The drivers also struggle with less oxygen in the air making physical effort that bit more exhausting. So it is a challenging environment for man and machine. The pit lane is one of the longest in F1 so teams will be aiming for a one stop race. The thin air also makes stopping the car more difficult and we have two long straights which are more Monza than Monaco followed by some quick esses before a final slow, twisty stadium sector. It is a weird track and not one which I have enjoyed very much. Mercedes have won both the previous GP’s on this redesigned circuit, one for Hamilton, one for Rosberg and both from pole position. It has been a bad venue for Ferrari who failed to get a car to the finish in 2015 and they were classified 5th and 6th last year despite Vettel finishing 4th and being presented with 3rd prize on the podium. He was one of three drivers to be classified 3rd at some point. Ricciardo was eventually declared 3rd after finishing 5th. Ferrari only managed 6th and 7th in qualifying so they come here looking like it is a venue they should be able to challenge Mercedes but they will have to significantly up their game compared to the first two modern Mexican GP’s. Red Bull was Mercedes nearest challenger last year, filling the second row, but the Stewards were out to get young Verstappen and didn’t really allow him the same leeway as say Rosberg was given. In total four drivers received racing penalties and the race was rather ruined by poor stewarding decisions. The Red Bull team do look ready to win a race on merit but it is unlikely to be with Ricciardo who will have the older spec Renault power unit the end of the season which is rumoured to cost him around 0.2 second a lap relative to Verstappen. He is also due to take penalties for new PU parts. We backed Verstappen last week and got 14/1, his excellent drive from the back of the pack has caught the eye of the bookies and he is now just an 11/2 shot. Force India will have the crowd favourite, Sergio Perez, running in front of the huge home crowd but the gap to the top three teams is just too big for them to realistically think about a podium. They have however had a car in the top 6 for the last five races now, two for Perez and three for Ocon, the point’s machine. With fourth place sewn up in the constructor’s league table the team will once again allow the two drivers to race each other, or crash into each other as the case may be. Hopefully not and my preference goes with Ocon who has been much better in qualifying that Perez in the last five races. 2 points Ocon to finish in the top 6 @ 2/1 with Betvictor Force India should enjoy being the 4th best team in F1, a great achievement for a customer team. Next year they will have another manufacturer to beat in shape of Renault. The French firm are still in rebuilding mode but they are taking on more staff, expanding the factory in England and still developing the car with 2018 in mind. They have even withdrawn from Formula E in order to move resources into their Formula 1 program. New signing, Carlos Sainz was very impressive on his team debut, qualifying 8th and finishing 7th. He should improve with each race in his new car/team and he must be a contender for a top six finish. Hulkenberg finished 7th here both times for Force India but he now has his work cut out vs. a fast team mate. Reliability is still a concern. Bwin are quoting 5/1 for a Sainz top 6 finish but that price is so out of line with the rest of the market that I have my doubts as to getting or, or worse getting paid at that price. Williams has enjoyed double points finishes here for both races and Massa has been quietly going about his business in the latter half of this season, scoring points in seven of his last eight races (he withdrew from the Hungarian GP) and the car will do well for two thirds of the lap at least. A double William’s points finish is 9/2 but Stroll is struggling in qualifying and this is another new track to learn. 3 points Massa to finish in the points @ 11/8 with Betvictor, Bet365 Toro Rosso continues to play musical chairs, dropping Kvyat once again, bringing back Gasley and keeping Brendon Hartley in the other car. Without Sainz Toro Rosso seem to have given up the hope of finishing 6th. Of course they will have a large cash input from Honda next season which will more than make up for any shortfall in prize money. Despite their poor record here and recent run of poor results it’s worth taking a chance on Vettel and Ferrari in the hope that they have a problem free weekend and can take advantage of any problems Mercedes may have with the maximum downforce circuit. Verstappen is very tempting. He drove well here last year, has no need for grid penalties, an upgraded PU and he would like to get one over the race stewards. If Ferrari can’t take the fight to Mercedes the only option is Verstappen as Ricciardo will be starting well down the grid. 3 points Sebastian Vettel to win @ 13/5 with Betstars 1 point Max Verstappen to win @ 6/1 with Stan James (11/2 William Hill) 4 points Max Verstappen to finish on the podium @ 8/13 with Betstars

Free practice three leaves everybody filled with hope that we may see Hamilton not getting another pole position. Then he comes out, presses the boost button and any hopes are quickly extinguished. It does happen occasionally however and this season it has been on maximum downforce tracks of which this is one. Because the track is at altitude things are different, the maximum downforce doesn’t result in the usual results of maximum downforce, and the drivers say it is more like Monza levels of downforce. But it may take away a large part of Mercedes famous qualifying advantage…the magic boost button. The turbo’s and internal combustion engine doesn’t work as well at altitude so turning it up to 11 might only result in a 10.25 performance. The emphasis here is more about a well-balanced car and a confident driver. It is almost as if the thin air is a bit of a leveller, like a wet track. There is also the matter of the track surface. It is a smooth, low grip surface and it does give up much grip. This morning at the start of FP3 the track was just 25 degrees, air temp 15. This afternoon it will nearer 45 degrees track and 25 air. That will change how the car handles compared to this morning and we should expect a somewhat different picture for qualifying. FP 2 was the most relevant session so far and we saw a Red Bull fastest and third fastest. The gaps have been very small and it looks like we could have an interesting race but qualifying? Yes Mercedes boost may not be so useful at this venue but with the electrical systems also providing boost they should still have little bit more extra power than Red Bull, who hasn’t had a car on pole since 2016. They have been close on occasions but ultimately they lack the power. Hamilton was just 0.075 off Verstappen’s time so even a few extra horses can close that. It maybe that the rising temperature is a bigger threat for Hamilton. So there is hope that we may have something other than a Mercedes on pole position but it’s all about the odds. I’d still want a decent price to take the risk and so far best odds of 5/1 are not really enough. No bet.
