Singapore GP - Race Day Update

Qualifying was good yesterday with Vettel winning the pole position bet and leaving us with a more interesting grid than usual. It was Vettel vs. the Red Bulls as Mercedes suffered once again on a slower circuit.
Vettel ended up 0.32 ahead of the nearest Red Bull of Verstappen, a comfortable margin but a lot of that will have been down to the qualifying mode power unit boost which isn’t available to Red Bull. Ferrari can’t run the race at the same setting and that 0.3 gap is likely to be much smaller. Red Bull were quicker in Fridays free practice but Ferrari did a lot of work on Friday night to fine tune the cars set up and their pace in FP3 is more relevant. In reality there is very little between the pace of the Ferrari and the Red Bulls here.
Ricciardo is still very bullish about his chances and not without good cause. Their car looks after its tyres better than the Ferrari and certainly better than Mercedes. This race doesn’t look like a straight forward one stop race. It’s a long race and some teams may have to make two stops while others may try something different and go for a one stopper. The chances of a safety car, or more, are high and that may open the path to a one stopper but unless your name is Flavio Briatorie it’s impossible to predict exactly when a safety car will be used.
To mix things up even more we may have a wet circuit at the start of the race. With three hours to go there was monsoon like rain lashing the track and while it is due to stop there are some forecasts suggesting that it last longer than normal and the track will not dry in time for the start. We have never seen any proper running here under lights and with a wet track. It could make visibility very difficult and the newly laid tarmac at various parts of the track will be particularly slippy.
However, the FIA have become a bit paranoid about accidents in wet races and Formula 1 is slowly heading to being a no racing in the wet formula. Would the race director allow a proper standing start on a wet track? Or will he want to start under the safety car with enough non racing laps run to dry the racing line out before real racing starts? I suspect the latter. A wet track would spice it up. Verstappen vs. Vettel on a damp track? You’d pay money to watch that but its safety first these days. Whatever happens with the wet track, a start on Inters would mean everyone would have freedom to switch to whatever compound they wish once it was dry enough.
The latest news is that the rain has stopped and most of the track is dry but there are a few wet patches and only a 40% chance of more rain. There is still the potential for the weather to throw in a curve ball, but it would be a first in Singapore.
In Vettel’s favour he has the all-important pole posiiton. From the nine races here the pole position driver has won seven, one was lost with a gearbox failure and the other was due to Briatorie fixing the race back in ’08. Vettel should be able to control the race from the front but Verstappen is not shy at attacking so it could get a bit tasty. Ricciardo could indeed inherit the lead if those two trip each other up.
Mercedes start 5th and 6th but they have struggled again in Singapore. They do not have the pace to really challenge the front runners but they could run a very different strategy. They each have a brand new set of the soft compound and running that for a second stint may allow a one stopper, Pirelli says that the quickest strategy is about 19 laps on the ultra softs and then a long run on the super softs but the ultra-soft to soft is not far of it. From watching the way the Merc was sliding in practice, they may have to go down the route of using the hardest compound, the soft. Whatever way it doesn’t look like being their day.
Hulkenberg starts 7th in the ever improving Renault and he will be chased by the two McLaren’s who can be just about competitive here but reliability is still a big concern.
Force India dropped the ball in qualifying only making 12th and 14th but they usually do underperform in qualifying in any case. They are good at tyre management and Perez has solid record here of always finishing in the points and always from outside the top 10 on the grid.
It is set up to be a long and interesting race. The potential for a damp track at the start, the inevitable safety car/cars and who runs what tyre strategy make it a real puzzle. We have backed Vettel already and he couldn’t be in a better position on this track but did he damage his car in qualifying? He hit the wall hard and that may have done a bit of damage to the internals like suspension or the transmission.
Verstappen doesn’t have a great track record on street circuits and his car is famously unreliable. He has been beating Ricciardo in qualifying but then getting beaten in the race and the Aussie is in great form and on a track he loves. He looks the biggest threat to Vettel. We have backed him for top 3 but he could go all the way. The temptation is to have something on Ricciardo to win but Vettel is also brilliant around this track and he knows how to win from the front so I will stick with the original selections.
Joylon Palmer is pointless and soon to be jobless. He needs a new gig for next season and needs to start scoring points to catch someone’s eye. It would be ironic if he was to break is duck on the very weekend his being dropped by Renault was announced to the press even before he was told. He does like the track and was looking good for a top 10 start but 11th is useful as he has free choice on tyre strategy. The car is improving and if, and it is a big if, it doesn’t break down, Palmer has a great chance of a point. Hulkenberg starts 7th and is now a regular top 6 contender. Rather than take the 7/4 for a Palmer points finish why not take 11/4 for a Renault double points finish? Poor reliability means its only to small stakes.

No group betting available this weekend and the match betting is just the usual boring team mate vs. team mate stuff. Bottas to beat Hamilton makes some appeal given Hamilton’s poor record vs. team mates here but Bottas has looked to be struggling more than usual this weekend and he might be busy battling with Hulkenberg for 6th place. The Hulk has been 6th in two of the last four races and makes some appeal at 7/5 to do so again but I will stick with the team bet. |

British luxury sportscar maker Aston Martin is looking to get more engaged in Formula One, chief executive Andy Palmer said on Sunday amid speculation of a title partnership with Red Bull and future engine involvement.
"We want to be more involved in the sport," Palmer told Britain's Channel 4 television while attending the Singapore Grand Prix.
"We’re currently studying the 2021 engine. If we get a reasonable regulation that brings down the cost of the engine, Aston would like to be involved in the engine," added the Briton.
"And then of course we’d like to be involved a little more next season and then join the dots. But it really depends on what happens with the engine regs."
Red Bull and Aston Martin have an existing relationship, with the team's race cars carrying branding for the marque since last year.
Top designer Adrian Newey, whose Renault-powered Red Bull race cars won four successive drivers' and constructors' titles between 2010-13, has worked with Aston Martin on the AM-RB 001 Valkyrie 'hypercar'.
Media reports have suggested Aston could become Red Bull's title sponsor next season.
Last month Aston reported its first half-yearly profit in almost a decade and it expects full-year volumes to rise by around a third to roughly 5,000 cars.

The chaotic start of the Singapore GP has probably cost us a thrilling finish to the F1 season and our ante post bet on Vettel. It was a poor error of judgement and not for the first time. This weekend we have the different challenge of the Malaysian GP, the very last one as the race organisers have had enough of the excessive hosting fees.
The circuit is very different to Singapore, it’s a modern F1 track, has a very wide racing surface with two very long straights a mix of fast sweeping corners and slow hairpins. The surface is abrasive and hot which is hard on tyres. The long straights mean that power is important, unlike Singapore, and that is bad news for Red Bull. They lacked power last year as well but came first and second after they took advantage of Bottas and Vettel colliding at the start and Hamilton suffered a power unit failure while leading.
A high attrition rate is par for the course in Malaysia, it is hard on man and machine and it is possible to get the odd surprise result, especially if rain plays a part. Rain showers are forecast for all three days, fewer on Sunday but the tarmac is so hot that any rain that falls very quickly evaporates and we only have real problems if we have a cloud burst. In that case the safety car will be called out which will just neutralise the race. Temperature is what can make it hard on the cars as cooling is difficult and the high temperature and high humidity make it very hard on the drivers.
It is expected that the requirement for power will reward Mercedes and they do prefer the faster tracks but Ferrari are really not that far behind Mercedes in the power department. It is reported that Vettel will have a new spec Ferrari power unit which may further narrow any power gap. Ferrari is the winning most team around this track, Vettel the winning most driver (4) and since they started dominating Formula 1 in 2014, Mercedes have won just the once here. However this year they have been very reliable and with his very strong qualifying record it is not hard to understand why Hamilton is the even money favourite.
His record here isn’t the best with just the one win from ten starts. Vettel on the other hand has won four times at Sepang, Raikkonen twice and Ricciardo once. Alonso has three wins…but I suspect he is not going to add to that tally this weekend. The long straights will be too much for the Honda and with the added heat stress, a DNF is more likely.
Qualifying has generally been all about Mercedes and Hamilton especially. Their qualifying mode in their power unit still has the edge on Ferrari who need a slower, high downforce track to be able to out qualify the Mercedes. Hamilton has eight poles in fourteen races making Hills offer of 8/11 spot on. However if you look at the tracks where Hamilton didn’t get pole position, Monaco, Hungary and Singapore are slow, twisty, high downforce circuits which were never going to be suited to his long wheelbase Mercedes. Only in Bahrain, Russia and Austria was he ‘beaten’ to pole.
Sepang is a much faster, much more flowing circuit, the kind of circuit which has proved to be a happy hunting ground for Hamilton and his Mercedes this season. His ‘true odds’ on this type of circuit are much closer to 1/3 which makes the 8/11 a good value price. There are always threats of course. The weather in Malaysia makes rain showers very possible and a down pour at the wrong time can throw a spanner in the works. The forecast for the weekend is the usual for this part of the world, a 50% chance of thunderstorms for qualifying. It will also be very hot so the track isn’t likely to be wet for long, if at all.
Bottas is another threat, he has the same car at his disposal and he has beaten Hamilton five times in qualifying, Bahrain, Russia, Monaco, Austria and Hungary. However this not a track on which Bottas has impressed on in qualifying and he has been out qualified by his team mate all four times, three times to Massa and once to Maldonado, hardly drivers of Hamilton’s calibre.

The race itself is likely to be closer. Ferrari may struggle in Q3 but once Mercedes wind the power down for the race there is usually little between the two teams and the pole position driver has only gone on to win four of the last ten Malaysian GP’s. Hamilton is the even money favourite, Vettel 13/5, Bottas 13/2 and Raikkonen 25/1, all of which look about right. The Red Bulls were 1-2 last year but they needed bad fortune for Vettel and both Mercedes for that to happen and how often does lightning strike twice?
With the reports that Vettel is due to get a new spec power unit for this weekend which may improve his chances but nothing has been confirmed as yet and I will hold fire on any race winner bets for now.
After the big three we have Force India in 4th place but Renault are now getting the pace to match them in terms of performance but not reliability. Force India are still developing the car and will have new aero parts and again unconfirmed reports of them running the very latest spec Mercedes power unit. They also plan to work on fine tuning the new parts they introduced in Singapore.
Renault is now employing 600 people and the might of a factory team is beginning to show. The chassis is getting there, the power unit slower to develop and reliability is poor but better to get that out of the way in a rebuilding year rather than a year or two down the line when they should be back competing for podiums. Hulkenberg’s last five races have seen him start in the top 7 four times so they are heading in the right direction. In those five races he has fished 6th twice. The car broke in Hungary and Singapore while they were just not suited to Monza.
The team are optimistic that they have a package that will go well around Sepang and Hulkenberg will have a brand new power unit which hopefully will last the distance. Even Joylon Palmer was able to take advantage of the retirements in front of him to finish 6th in Singapore. Force India has a much more consistent, reliable package and will be able to hold on to their 4th place in the constructors championship but Renault need to keep on developing so that they can pass Toro Rosso and Williams to try and finish the season 5th and pick up the extra prize money.
Force India do still struggle with qualifying and they are no stick on to reach Q3 and they have to work hard in the races to try and make the top 6 which will be the target for Renault and Force India. Red Bull’s lack of reliability, especially with Verstappen does help to open the door to a top six and with Renault on the charge, Hulkenberg can be backed to get his 3rd top six from six races.

Haas are a difficult team to follow, their form seems to be totally random, but Grosjean says this is his favourite Formula 1 circuit. Is that enough to inspire a bet on him to score a point? Not really. The team have largely stopped on any development on this year’s car as they are concentrating on the 2018 and with a modest budget, they cannot do both at once.
Danny Kvyat definitely won’t be scoring any points this weekend as he has been benched in favour of Pierre Gasly, the 2016 GP2 champion. He is part of the Red Bull development programme and is racing the Japanese Super Formula championship this year where is in 2nd place. The Toro Rosso will be losing the development race to the likes of Renault but in the hands of a good driver like Carlos Sainz, off to Renault next season, it is still capable of top ten finishes. Is Gasly good enough to score on debut? He may be but Toro Rosso are slipping down the rankings and their best chances for more points are in high attrition races or on the less power sensitive circuits. |

| No jõud kindlasti suurem ja kõik mis lahtiselt lendab kergemini minema muidugi. Vähemalt Haas sai õiguse kõik taastamine ilma karistuseta teha.

Well it’s not going well so far. Hamilton and Mercedes are having an unexpected weekend from hell as their car simply isn’t working. No grip, no speed and no answers as to why and Mercedes are in damage control mode again. They got away with it at Singapore and who knows, a thunder storm could mix things up but on merit the Mercedes looks to be the 3rd best car after Ferrari and Red Bull.
Ferrari has decided to change Vettel’s internal combustion unit in the power unit as a precaution. No penalty is due but there is a rush in the pits to get him ready. Raikkonen was quickest this morning and must now enter calculations as this looks like Ferrari vs. Red Bull with Mercedes a distant third. Yes they can put the qualifying boost button on but that’s not enough to close a 0.5 gap.
The practice sessions have been very messy for different reasons and we had various test drivers running in FP1, rain, broken drain covers and shortened sessions. It’s hard to get a really clear picture even between team members.
There seems no way that Mercedes are going to find a way to make the car work well enough even for a second row spot. Toto Wolf said that Friday was one of the worst he can remember and they have been unable to fix it overnight. The five point bet on Hamilton is gone sadly. We could chase it with a bet on Vettel for pole and in reality only Raikkonen looks to have any hope of beating him. Yes the mechanics are still working on his car and a rush job can lead to problems but all things considered he deserves to be a strong favourite. He is 10-4 up on Raikkonen in qualifying and despite being second this morning he should be on pole for the race.
Mercedes are in damage limitation mode and so am I.

Jääb veel loota, et Hamilton katkestab, muidu on põnevus 5 etappi enne lõppu läinud. Ja see on liiga vara.
Kas nüüd on võimalus vahetada kogu kompott uue vastu, võtta 25+ kohta karistust ?
