British GP - Race Day Update 2017-07-16 00:00:00 (This report was written at 2017-07-16 10:55:13) We have a slightly different looking grid for today’s British GP with Ricciardo starting 19th and Mercedes Valtteri Bottas 9th. It’s the same face on pole again and it must be said that qualifying is becoming as boring as it has been for three or four years now. Mercedes just turn up the power unit and get pole. In the race Ferrari are always closer, Mercedes were about 0.2 quicker in the long run simulations on Friday but Ferrari changed the set up overnight on Friday and both drivers were much happier with yesterday. There was a little light rain around yesterday but the forecast for today is for cloudy conditions but only a 10% chance of any rain during the race which reduces the chances of any freak results. The pole position driver has only gone on to win five of the last nineteen British GP’s which makes the best odds for Hamilton of just 1/2 look very short. Yes he had a handy advantage of 0.55 over Raikkonen in second place, but this is a very long lap so any advantage will look big but if a Ferrari gets a better start and gets the lead, Hamilton would not find it easy to get that lead back in a hurry. His team mate, Bottas starts out of place on the grid thanks to his 5 place penalty for changing a gearbox and a scrappy qualifying lap. However he was quickest in both practice sessions on Friday and he will be interesting to watch today. He will be starting the race on the more durable soft compound of tyre while the other top 10 starters are on the super soft. Expect Bottas to run deep for his first stint, making up a bunch of places as those ahead pit for their change to softs. He would then come out on the quicker super soft tyres for his second stint and that sounds like a good strategy so long as he can make the super softs last till the end of the race. He will still be aiming for a podium but best odds of 13/8 are not giving anything away. It is a strategy which should see him running the quicker tyre later in the race when the fuel load has come down and in the fastest or one of the fastest cars on the grid, he must be a candidate for fastest lap, one box he hasn’t ticked so far. 2 points Bottas to set the fastest lap of the race @ 5/2 with Hills, Betfred, Paddy Power The other driver clearly out of place on the grid is Ricciardo who starts from 19th after Red Bulls unreliability stuck the Aussie’s car rather than Verstappen’s. It must be said however that Red Bull were disappointed after not being in the same league as Ferrari or Mercedes yesterday, 1.50 off the pole position pace. Even on a long lap that is a mountain to climb and only rain will bring Verstappen into the frame that looks very unlikely. Ricciardo can make up plenty of places and get some points but 4/6? The car isn’t really reliable enough to go for that. Nico Hulkenberg had a new floor on his Renault and a season best qualification in 6th (starts 5th) was the result. Maybe Renault has now taken that step which was long overdue. We have Palmer to score some points and he starts a creditable 11th even though his car wasn’t fitted with the new floor. He generally makes up places on grid position so he is in with a reasonable chance. Williams find themselves way off the pace, starting 14th and 15th, which is one row better than where they started from in Austria last week and they finished 9th and 10th. Stroll has struggled round this track all weekend but Massa looked to have the pace to make Q3 throughout the practice sessions and he can make it back into the top 10 by race end. His qualifying lap was compromised by the amount of traffic on the track and he would appear to be out of position. He is generally a 11/10 shot to finish in the top 10 but Betvictor are going a stand out 2/1 which is a value bet. Only the swift will get the odds, snooze you lose. 6/4 would be acceptable. 3 points Massa to finish in the top 10 @ 2/1 with Betvictor
