Formula 1 returns to Europe following the European GP in Azerbaijan two weeks ago. The Red Bull owned Spielberg circuit is very different to Baku and is an unusual track in its own right. It is the prettiest venue in F1 and is a very short lap on a circuit with just nine corners, few of which are slow, and it is very much a power circuit but with good low drag performance rewarded. The track has been resurfaced since last season and the new surface is said the make the lap even quicker but more severe on tyre wear. This ‘unknown factor’ will be compounded by a weather forecast which is predicting showers for Friday and Saturday but the race itself should be dry if a little cloudier and cooler. The teams may get little dry weather practice before the race so getting the tyres sorted may well be a challenge. This current configuration of the Spielberg circuit has been in use since 2014 and has hosted two good races and some genuine competition for the dominant Mercedes team. The lack of corners means it never has and still won’t suit the Red Bull cars which are much more competitive on slower twisty tracks. They are still behind the Mercedes powered cars in terms of horsepower and it looks like we should have another battle between Mercedes and their two main customer teams, Force India and Williams along with Vettel somewhere in the mix. Williams and Force India have had three podiums between them in the last three races and while it seems that Force India is now on a better run of form it is Williams who have impressed here in the last two years. They locked out the front row of the grid after qualifying 1-2 in 2014 and Bottas went on to finish 3rd with Massa 4th after a race in which they showed no great ambition to win it. Last year they didn’t qualify so well but finished with Massa 3rd and Bottas 5th, so podium finishes in both races for the once great Williams team. Force India hasn’t done that well with 9th and 6th places in both races. Rosberg has won both the races on the remodelled track, benefiting from some bad luck for Hamilton and it should be close between the two again with Rosberg boosted after an easy win in Baku put his title hopes back on track. I am still not convinced Hamilton is fully concentrated on his job this season and maybe he will be back to his best in front of his adoring fans at Silverstone next week but when things go wrong he seems to accept the fact grudgingly rather than fight harder to make things better. He remains the worst starter on the grid and indeed it was Rosberg beating him off the line here last year which won him the race. Rosberg has already won five of this year’s eight races and he should be shorter odds than the 7/4 on offer. 4 points Rosberg to win the Austrian GP @ 7/4 generally available Which one of Mercedes opponents can push them closest this weekend? Williams is the obvious choice such is their record here but we backed then to do well at Baku and it must be said they disappointed. Bottas got off to a good start in FP1 &2 but the bizarre accident were a loose drain cover damaged his car at the start of FP3 denying him any running seemed to stop him in his tracks while Massa wasn’t on it all weekend blaming a failure to heat the tyres up properly. This is a track that is familiar to them and they know how to set the car up to get maximum performance. They achieved the highest straight line speeds in Baku so this track plays to their strengths while the lack of corners minimises their weakness. Force India has had two podiums in the last three races, both for Perez and like Williams they have one driver in much better form than the other. Hulkenberg has had a disappointing season compared to his team mate but he has had three consecutive point’s finishes and a big race from him is not far away. Perez is in the best form of his career and while it has taken a long time, he is finally realising his potential and is being touted as a possible replacement for Raikkonen at Ferrari. His race from 7th on the grid following a 5 place grid penalty to score a podium in Baku underlined just how well he is going. To out qualify everyone bar Mercedes in Baku was excellent but so was his recovery drive in the race. Ferrari is another team with a struggling driver in the shape of Kimi Raikkonen. There is speculation over his future at Ferrari and his job at Ferrari now seems to be to make Vettel look good. His form in the last three races has been poor while Vettel has finished in the top 4 in every race he has completed this season. Ferrari has improved and should be winning races with Vettel but they just seem to be missing something and that might just be qualifying pace or race strategy. So there is no doubt that Mercedes will be the team to beat as usual. Williams have shown to be the second best team here in 2014 and 2015 and while they are behind Red Bull in the championship in 2016, this is another track were the Red Bull will be relatively uncompetitive. Force India should also have too much for Red Bull and the logical top seven should be a Mercedes 1-2 followed by the two Williams, Vettel and the Force India drivers. 1 point Bottas to finish in the top 3 @ 6/1 generally available 1 point Perez to finish in the top 3 @ 7/1 with Paddy Power 2 points Massa to finish in the top 6 @ 2/1 generally available 2 points Hulkenberg to finish in the top 6 @ 2/1 with Betvictor The rest of the teams will be fighting over the scraps from the top table. Toro Rosso had a double DNF at Baku but they have a car that while relatively underpowered does seem to operate on all sorts of track. Reliability is always the biggest worry for this small team. Kvyat is not enjoying his demotion from Red Bull to Toro Rosso so the steady Sainz is the most likely to deliver a few more points. He has just signed a new deal to stay with Toro Rosso in 2017 so he has no more distractions in his mind about what he will be doing next year. Five scoring races from eight is a good strike rate and he remains underrated at even money to finish in the top 10 once again. 3 points Carlos Sainz to finish in the points @ evens with Ladbrokes and Hills Haas had a lucky/brilliant start to the season but they have struggled since Bahrain really. They hope that a return to the hotter climate of the European summer will help them work the tyres better but perhaps they were flattered by the bad luck of others in the early races and a small team will always lose out to big teams like McLaren out developing them as the season goes on. They have their points and arguably should be spending their money on next year’s car. The weather forecast suggests that max temperature on Sunday will be 23 degrees and that is not going to be enough for Haas. McLaren were always going to struggle in Canada and Azerbaijan due to the very long spent at full throttle so this more compact circuit will suit their package much better, even if it is no Monaco. They are the 7th best team on the grid and will probably need one or two retirements ahead of them to score more points, but that is possible. Reliability remains as big a worry as the lack of power. Renault is similarly upbeat that this circuit will suit their car much better, but they were dreadful in Baku, qualifying on the very back row of the grid, so anything will be an improvement. There is a feeling that Renault do not want to waste too many resources on this year’s car (which really is last year’s car) when the 2017 cars will have to be so different. Sauber have paid their staff on time for the first time this year which suggests they may have found a new backer but like Renault there is no point in spending scare resources on this year’s car and they will be battling it out for last place on the grid with Manor. The next update will be around 30 minutes before qualifying.
