The Ranty Bit

Well at least we got a race in Texas last week, well Mercedes had their race and the rest seemed to have some fun racing in the ‘other Formula 1’. The weekend was overshadowed by the politics and finances of what remains of the sport but as usual, nothing was resolved as the various interested parties pulled in different directions. The ringmaster went round making contradictory remarks but failed to convince anybody that he was actually doing anything to sort out the myriad problems rocking what was once his great empire.

All empires come to an end and all dictators are eventually toppled and it could be that we are now seeing the end of the Eccelstone era and what a sad end it is. Eccelstone was the man given the credit for turning F1 into one of the greatest commercial sporting successes ever seen in the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s. From gentleman racers having some fun to the biggest televised sport on the planet, he made himself and many others very rich in the process. However it is clear that things are very different today and the 84 year old Eccelstone looks unable to fix the problems.

His hands are tied of course because he sold F1’s commercial rights to a venture capital company (CVC) who simply suck the life blood out of the sport without giving anything back. It was interesting to read that it was not Bernie who talked to the smaller teams who are broke and threatening to hold a boycott of the US GP but the head of CVC. He was rumoured to have offered $100 million to prop up the struggling teams as he perhaps realised that their Golden Goose was critically ill and needed some urgent action. Bernie mean while wandered about looking every bit his 84 years, making silly remarks about the sound of the cars being the real cause of F1’s problems. It really is time for him to go.

His legacy will be a sport in decline (perhaps terminal decline). He has sold the sport down the river but greased enough palms for him to be able to get away with it for years, but sadly he has run out of options. He once said that F1 would always be broadcast on free to air TV channels as they got the biggest audiences and delivered the numbers the big sponsors wanted. Where are we now? The free to air TV companies simply couldn’t afford his huge demands and they walked away. Free to air has by and large been replaced by subscription only TV, pushing up the cost to fans and decimating the viewing numbers, which in turns drives away sponsors. Cutting of your nose to spite your face is a saying that springs to mind.

Eccelstone’s success was largely built on growing TV audiences to a point that F1 was only beaten by the World Cup and the Olympics in terms of TV viewing figures. That model is now broken but he still clings to it like a baby to a comfort blanket. The world has changed dramatically in terms of how people watch their sports but Bernie doesn’t accept this fact. It is just a passing fad and in the end the old TV model will work. It is like the internet and social media has never happened in Bernie’s world and he almost seems proud of his stubbornness to grasp change.

The dwindling TV money had to be replaced somehow so he broke another cardinal rule. He never wanted more that 16 races a year at one time as too much of a good thing dilutes its appeal. This year we have 19 races and with Mexico and Azerbaijan coming on stream in the next two years we will be up to at least 20 races a season. Of course this drives up the costs for teams so he is giving with one hand and taking away with the other, but it keeps CVC happy.

He has taken F1 to new parts of the world to spread the brand and open new markets for teams and sponsors. Unfortunately he has taken F1 to places were the sponsors are not that interested. South Korea, Turkey, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and the soon to be Azerbaijan GP are all examples for F1 just chasing the dollars offered by despots or oil rich states keen to look’ respectable’. He has managed to get one race in America, one place where the teams do need to be, but failed to get the two or three he wanted. Is that because the Americans are not stupid enough to give him what he wants but rather want to have a race that is financially viable? America doesn’t need F1, F1 needs America and Bernie has failed to establish F1 in the USA.

So while costs continue to rise in F1 the revenue is falling, the interest in the sport is falling, Eccelstone and CVC try to cobble together a few new deals to keep the ship afloat, pretending all the time that everything will be fine and that small teams going bust is not a serious problem. Maybe spending so much time defending himself in various courts around the globe has drained him of whatever energy he has left but it looks like he has lost his grip on reality.

The Actual Race Preview

At least this weekend we have a ‘proper’ GP. A race that will be full of passionate fans making a lot of noise, enjoying their sport played out on a classic track and very possibly a wet track. Interlagos is second only to Belgium when it comes to the likelihood of rain and the forecast for this weekend is for rain every day but it is not 100% certain of being wet. The track has been re surfaced in preparation for the race and wet or dry that will throw a cat amongst the pigeons. In the dry the new tarmac is likely to be low on grip and the rate of tyre degradation a bit of an unknown, especially if the practice sessions are rain affected.

So before we even start looking at form there are two big unknown variables in the mix and there is the possibility of some kind of strange result. Showers, crashes, safety cars, tyre wear issues and unreliability are all very much in the mix for this weekend so it may not be all plain sailing for the mighty Mercedes for a change. The track is very short which really makes qualifying very intense with the smallest of mistakes costing places on the grid. Rosberg and Hamilton do not have great records here, just the one podium for Hamilton, and of course they will be feeling the heat of the pressure of trying to win the title. Hamilton has a healthy lead but with double points coming up in the final race he still needs to beat his team mate and avoid a DNF at all costs.

The Mercedes is still the car to beat and once again the two are huge favourites to win the race but they have been beaten before this season so we have to have an open mind for this race with so many variables coming into play. Mercedes only real opposition this season has come from Red Bull and Williams and that is unlikely to change. Red Bull has won three races in the hands of Ricciardo and is probably going to be their nearest challengers again.

The circuit has enough corners to play to the strengths of the Red Bull and while still down on power, they have coped quite well on the faster circuits by running with a low drag set up. It is a track on which they have dominated in recent years so they understand the requirements of trading off downforce required for the middle sector and the low drag for the faster 1st and 3rd sectors.

We had a wet race in Japan very recently and that gives us some idea of the likely form of the various teams. Mercedes enjoyed another 1-2 finish (yawn) followed by the Red Bulls of Vettel and Ricciardo, Button, the two Williams’ and Vergne 9th from 20th on the grid. Red Bulls success was a result of them setting the car up with a lot of rear wing for better race performance rather than maximising grid positions. Why everyone didn’t do that baffled me as everyone knew it was going to be a wet race. One worry for all the Renault powered teams is that Interlagos is not a circuit that requires a lot of heavy braking which in turn makes charging the power unit more difficult and you do not need that if you are already down on power.

Jenson Button looks like his F1 career will be over at the end of the season but perhaps he has one last shot at glory in a race with mixed conditions and unpredictability. He is a proven wet weather expert and has a sharp brain when it comes to making the most of mixed up races. The McLaren has shown improved form in recent races but it had front end grip problems in Texas and you do not need a weak front end around this circuit.

Jean Eric Vergne drove a great race in the wet in Japan and is a good wet weather driver. He also had a strong race last week showing aggression which finally cost him a 5 second penalty for pushing Grosjean off the track. That cost him 9th place but it was still his 3rd point’s finish in the last four races and that in a car that is not always great over a race distance. His odds to finish in the points are just 8/11 which is not giving much away.

Williams have a decent car and the powerful Mercedes power unit but they have largely failed to make the most of their chances this season. This is Massa’s home race and he has raised his game here in the past but I have never been a great fan of his when the track is wet. Bottas has shown good wet weather form in the past but it has to be said that the Williams was very poor in the wet race in Japan which is a serious concern.

Ferrari is becoming a bit of a joke with just 35 points from the last five races and Raikkonen is now struggling to get into the points. The track needs a strong front end and that is something that Raikkonen has struggled with big time this season so he could be in for another torrid weekend. Alonso is still keeping everyone waiting regarding where he will be next season but he is not really that motivated in what is a poor car. Force India cost us a packet last week with a rare double DNF. Perez was just a complete arse and received a 7 place grid penalty for his troubles while Hulkenberg’s power unit failed and he will be driving an old one this week. Hulkenberg has shown good wet weather form in the past (including a pole position here for Williams) but the Force India is not as competitive as it was at the start of the season.

Young Kvyat has a 6 place grid penalty carried over from last week which will make his race very difficult. Lotus finally got back on the score sheet last week with both cars competing for points but it looked as rubbish as ever and it is probably not the sign of a proper revival. We never got to see what the race pace of Sutil in the race would have been as he was taken out by Perez on the first lap. It was pace that came out of the blue and may well have been the driver nailing a great lap. It is hard to know what Sutil’s state of mind will be after his team announced that they have signed two new drivers for 2015, despite Sutil having a valid contract for next season.

So we have a race that looks likely to be atypical due to the new track surface and wet weather being forecast but the favourites remain hard to oppose. Red Bull did a very good job in the wet weather in Japan recently and a wet race helps to negate some of the power issues they have compared to the Mercedes powered cars. They know how to prepare a car for this track and with concerns about William’s wet weather performance and front end grip problems for McLaren; the Red Bull drivers might have a clear run to being best of the rest. Ricciardo has dominated Vettel for the bulk of the season but it was Vettel who was the better of the two in Japan’s wet race (finishing 3rd). Some of Ricciardo’s starts in recent races have also made is life more difficult that it should be and I will make a couple of modest punts on Vettel to remind people why he is a four times champion.

Brazilian GP - Race Day Update

Yesterdays qualifying gave us the usual Mercedes 1-2 with Rosberg once again edging out Hamilton for pole. Rosberg’s problem is that he just has not been able to convert these poles into wins if it is Hamilton beside him on the grid. It seems that Hamilton is just too quick for him. Williams fill the 2nd row and Massa was very close to the front row, just under 0.2 off the pace of the Mercedes of Hamilton. That sounds very close but you have to remember that Interlagos is a very short lap and the time intervals are always very close so it does flatter Williams to some extent.

The Williams do have a small straight line speed advantage so if they can get close enough to the Mercedes they may be able to use DRS to attempt a pass but I suspect that so long as the Mercs get a clean start then they will control the race comfortably. Williams will also be concerned about the weather, which as ever, is impossible to accurately predict, witnessed by the myriad of different forecasts.

I have seen everything but snow forecast for this afternoon’s race. Anything from dry but cloudy, through some patchy light drizzle all the way to thunderstorms. From a 20% chance of rain to a 60% chance. Obviously there is a chance of rain but there was a much higher chance of rain for qualifying and that that never materialised. Williams have under performed in wet conditions already this season and they are hoping for a dry race, as are most teams due to the nature of the newly resurfaced track. Any water that falls on this new, oily bitumen will just sit on top of the track surface and massively reduce grip to the point were it could be dangerous. If we do get a heavy downpour then a red flag situation is quite possible, especially given the fact that recovering cars around this track is hard and with the Bianchi crash still fresh in everyone’s mind caution will be the key word fro the stewards.

Rain really could be a game changer today and having such differing forecasts does not inspire much confidence from a betting point of view. Take the view that it will be dry but we get rain and your selections are cooked, assume a weather affected race and it stays dry, ditto. At least we know that the Mercedes is still the best package and starting from the front they should get a clean start and decide the outcome between themselves. Hamilton has by far the better race winning record this season and you get the sense that Rosberg knows this and is half way to being beaten before he even starts the race.

At least Hamilton backers can back him at odds against with Betvictor offering 6/5 which is actually a fairly generous price. He has 10 wins from 17 races and has won the last five in a row so I was expecting him to be odds on across the board. I assume Betvictor’s compilers are factoring in the possibility of rain turning the race into a bit of a lottery and of course that is the biggest risk for Mercedes. The opening lap of this race has often delivered high drama like Vettel’s crash spin and ultimate recovery a couple of years ago and Hamilton accidentally switching off his engine when fighting for the championship in 2007. There is till a lot of pressure on both Mercedes drivers not to screw the start up but at the same time repelling the ambitions for the Williams behind them. There is no doubt that Massa will be fully charged up for his home race and...well he can get a bit Latin at times.

Jenson Button is actually hoping for a bit of changeable weather as he knows that is his best chance of maybe sneaking a podium. The four cars ahead of him are just too quick and his focus is more on the cars behind him. Hills have put Button in Groups 2 with Alonso, Raikkonen and Magnussen and they make the Englishman 2/1 second favourite behind Alonso who is even money favourite. I am a big fan of Alonso but he should not be the favourite in this group given what we have seen so far. For a start Button starts 5th compared to 7th for Magnussen, 8th for Alonso and 10th for Kimi. The Ferrari is giving away plenty of straight-line speed to the Mercedes powered cars and it is hard to see how they can out race the more powerful Mercedes pair ahead of them on the grid. Button maybe getting dropped by McLaren in favour of Alonso and Magnussen next year but he has comfortably beaten his team mate over this season so far (12-5 in race H2H’s). He has got a better chance of winning this group than the odds suggest.

4 points Button to win Group 2 @ 2/1 with Hills

Our ante post selection, Sebastian Vettel, starts a modest 6th and it is clear that his chances depend on some rain. The Red Bull is good in the corners and a wet race means a slower race which takes away much of Mercedes power advantage. A slower race means more time spent in the corners and that plays to Red Bulls strengths but a dry race means that he is likely just to be out gunned by the more powerful Mercedes powered teams around him.

Ferrari are very slow on the straights and while Raikkonen says he is much happier with the handling of his car this weekend he may find that just holding his position will be a challenge. Alonso just pipped Raikkonen in qualifying but there were signs of his displeasure with Ferrari when he delivered a verbal blast to the team for sending him out with fully charged battery in Q1.

The tyres were briefly a talking point on Friday with the soft tyres (which Pirelli did not want to use on this track but were persuaded to by Massa) blistering very badly after just 7- 8 laps but the track temperatures on Friday were very hot, well above 50 degrees, and is not forecast to that hot today. However with just an hour or so to go the sun is out at Interlagos and the track is getting hotter so those starting on the softs may have to pit early to get rid of that compound. The problem with pitting early on this short circuit is that you come out into slower traffic. That offers those starting on the more durable medium tyre do have a chance to make up some track position in the first stint. Gutierrez did a fine job to qualify 11th but it is hard to see a Sauber being strong over a race distance.

Hulkenberg has the potential to make up places if the tyres do become an issue. His Force India is falling down the pecking order as the season goes on and the team runs out of money but the car is still quite miserly when it comes to tyre wear. Starting 12th Hulkenberg has only failed to finish in the top 10 in four races so far this season, two were retirements and he failed to score a point in Russia after a 5 place grid penalty and a poor track for overtaking. Only in Italy was he just not quick enough and he looks to have a solid claim for another point or two today
