Nojah, meeldiv see kohe kindlasti pole.

China Doesn't Need a Politicized Google
http://english.cri.cn/6909/2010/03/20/195s558077.htm
Spoiler
tsitaat: |
Google's actions show that the world's biggest search engine company has abandoned its business principles and instead shows the world a face that is totally politicized.
First, it claims without any evidence that the Chinese government has supported hackers' attacks against it. Then it threatened to pull out of the Chinese market if the government doesn't compromise on Internet regulations. Finally, American politicians and government institutions spoke up to back the company up and show the world a slapstick comedy, said a commentary by Xinhua News Agency.
As a hi-tech company famous for its innovation, Google's deviation from the principle that the business world has long been sticking to and its politicized actions make people can't help but doubt whether the firm is still doing business independently and what its backers really want.
Having been in operation for four years with a very nice Chinese name, "Guge," Google must know that it should abide by laws and regulations in each country if it wants to do business there. Only by doing this can it become localized and win good market share as well as gain profits.
No country will allow information about subversion, separation, racialism and terrorism to circulate in it through the Internet. Sovereignty and borders also exist in cyberspace, which will need to be watched by each country's laws and regulations.
It is a great pity that the Google case told us the company's aim of entering the Chinese market seems not for commercial reasons but to act as a tool to penetrate into the Chinese culture as well as into Chinese people's values.
Google's relations with the US government cannot be deeper. US media has said Google was the fourth-largest supporter of Barack Obama in his election campaign. Four of the company's former executives including Sumit Agarwal, who was the product manager for Google Mobile team and is currently deputy assistant secretary of defense, are now serving the US government.
American politicians may be glad to see Google being politicized but this is no doubt a tragedy for a famous multinational company which has gained its reputation and advantages by one innovation after another in the Internet field.
How can people believe that the company's search results are without any bias when it lacks independence as well as business ethics?
China's openness to the world is widely seen. China will also make every effort to perfect its regulations on the Internet, but this is the country's internal affair, as it is in other countries.
To stay or to leave, that is Google's decision. China's Internet market with 400 million users can only and will grow stronger.
Maybe Google is preparing to retreat, and maybe it is still hesitating. But one thing is clear: China won't let its regulations or laws bend to any companies' threats.
It is ridiculous and arrogant for an American company to attempt to change China's laws. The country doesn't need a politicized Google or Google's politics. |

Google starts serving uncensored results to China
http://www.techspot.com/news/38327-google-starts-serving-uncensored-results-to-china.html
tsitaat: |
Despite China's warnings, Google has proceeded with plans to stop censoring its services in the country. Starting today, the company is redirecting users of Google.cn to Google.com.hk where Google Search, Google News, and Google Images are uncensored in simplified Chinese. Google notes that the additional load on its Hong Kong servers may result in some slowdowns or temporary outages, but that should clear up once the transition is complete.
The Chinese government is undoubtedly displeased with Google's decision, and forewarned that the company would face "consequences" if it disregarded Chinese regulations. Repercussions for violating the country's wishes have not been thoroughly outlined, but Google says its services could be blocked at any time. Users in the area might want to bookmark this page, which shows the status of Google services in mainland China.
In the meantime, Google intends to continue R&D as well as maintain a sales presence in China. |

China Internet crisis escalates
http://channel.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=23105
Spoiler
tsitaat: |
While everyone was making loads of money buying and borrowing cheaply from China, its dodgy record on human rights was largely glossed over. Since the West mucked up its economic system and China emerged relatively better-off, human rights have suddenly shot up the agenda again - especially in the US.
A major proxy for attacking China in this respect has been its censorship of the Internet. Google has long been criticised for agreeing to censor search results for google.cn and, when the Gmail accounts of Chinese civil rights activists were hacked late last year, Google threatened to stop censoring in China and put that into action earlier this week, when it effectively pulled-out of mainland China by redirecting users to its Hong Kong site.
There was some initial huffing and puffing from Chinese officialdom, but the country has yet to offer a substantial response to Google's decision. However, China's second largest mobile operator - China Unicom - has announced it will remove Google's search functionality from new mobiles, according to the FT.
On the US side, there was a congressional hearing on the matter, rather cheesily entitled "Google and Internet Control in China: A Nexus Between Human Rights and Trade?" The witnesses include Google's director of US public policy - Alan Davidson - whose testimony you can read here, and Chistine Jones, general counsel at the Go Daddy group. You can see a video of the hearing here, but be aware that the coverage doesn't start until 24:30 into the clip.
Why Go Daddy - the world's biggest domain name registration company - was asked to make an appearance, we assume, was its decision to stop registering domain names in China, as reported by the Washington Post. The reason given is new Chinese rules requiring applicants to submit a bunch of personal information, including photos of themselves.
US congress has patted both Google and Go Daddy on the head and told them they're good proxies. In contrast Microsoft, which is maintaining a stance of trying to work within Chinese laws, risks banishment to the doghouse if it doesn't do what the US state wants. Perhaps the two countries aren't as far apart as they think. |
