RotA is an amusing action-romp with some RPG elements pasted on. This really only shows in the skill ('aspect') trees, where you can unlock new abilities in good old Diablo 2 fashion.
Sadly, dialogues don't really offer any substantial choices. The answers you give mainly serve to earn you points with the specific Olympian god tied to that answer. These points work towards earning you more aspects. Apart from some slightly different conversations, they have no other effects, so if you're expecting a trip through the moral spectrum à la Fallout 3, you'll be sorely disappointed.
The game's story definitely had potential, considering the richness of Greek mythology, and the game manages to deliver a few memorable moments, despite the fact that the combat gets repetitive (button bashing) a couple of hours in.
The game's story has been greatly 'Hollywoodized'; despite the forementioned richness of the mythological background, RotA too often resorts to storytelling clichés, political correctness ('You're a slaver? But that's illegal!') and villains that are recognizable as villains from the moment they first appear, even if they're being sneaky. Like in most B-movies, exaggerated voice-acting and their choice of clothing give them away instantly. And if the developpers wanted to live up to the marketing hype, couldn't they have given some of the npc's different skins? I had a giggle when, during a quest, I had to choose a replacement for an old watch commander, only to find out that the three candidates all looked exactly the same, save for the colours of their armour.
Like I said before, RotA is an amusing enough game - for a couple of days. You'd have to be pretty lousy at this type of game to not reach the end within a week of moderate playing. All-in-all, I was disappointed by the experience, because they could've made it so much better. Some of the game's core features, such as the bloody combat and dedicating deeds to specific gods in order to win favour and skill points with them, are pretty nice.
If I had to rate this game, I'd give it a 7/10 at most. Unless you're absolutely loaded, you're probably best off spending your hard-earned money on a game that will last you a bit longer. |

RPG elements in the game are extremely weak. Dialogues with generic NPCs are boring and pointless. What you choose to say have no effect on how an event unfolds- it just gives you a "point" with a particular god/goddess. Doesn't help that the voice acting is sub-par.
Side quests (which you more or less must do-it's a linear progression model) are mind-numbingly boring. For example, to start the sea voyage to Delphi, you have to run back and forth from the palace to the harbour with no action or sense of urgency. Good 5 to 10 minutes of running just so that your uncle can take a look at the map you got from the harbour; then back. There are a LOT of these tasks.
Of course, running around wouldn't be as painful if the graphics were nice, which they are not. In all seriousness, GoW 2 has a better overall texture and character animation than this game. Yes, the static screenshots focusing on main characters may seem nice, but when you see the game in action, it simply doesn't cut it for next-gen.
(Example: in the beginning scene, you chase an assassin. He goes to the balcony and jumps over. When you get there, you must press SPACE to initiate a cutscene where you, having jumped before the camera was on him, roll onto the next balcony.
Similarly, when you press a button in front of the doors they magically open. There are some doors in the palace that your soldiers will open for you- but this only highlights the fact YOU don't have the animation to open doors)
Action component of the game gets old very quick. You have a very few combos, and while chopping limbs may be fun for a while, it grow boring very fast. So far, you approach most enemies in the same way. Hit. Break Shield. Cut in half. It's very prosaic and button mashy. Given that you don't level, but only upgrade weapons and gain god powers (which you never have to use to beat enemies), it leaves a lot to be desired.
There is no on-screen minimap. You must open the overall menu and find a map there. For a game with a large, nondescript, poorly textured and designed gameworld, it is a terrible annoyance.
Someone said that this game is like Mass Effect + God of War. That's true in part, in that that's what the devs were going for. And failed. Pretty hard.
It's a real pity; I've waited long for this game, and wanted to like it. |

The game's very poor. You can see that it was rushed out for Christmas. From 30 minutes of playing, my impressions are:
1. the texture quality is a mess: main characters are ok, but some of the world objects and NPCs are very very poor, as in PS2 poor. Also the maps are boring/repetitive.
2. animation is poor: even the well-textured characters suffer when they can't walk properly or lack the animation to open doors. Dialogue gestures are choppy and awkward. They were going for Mass Effect's cinematic dialogue, but missed it by miles. Oh, and you can't jump except in cutscenes.
3. action is ok. decapitating enemies is satisfying, but if what you want to play is a good, bloody action game, just boot up your dusty ps2 and play God of War 2. |

ise ka nüüd natuke mänginud. suur suur pettumus , inventory puudub, aega ajalt ssaad mõne uue eseme, tunnelieffect, mehi tappes saad, mingieid skille ka( relva saab kasutada ainult vaenlae juuresolekul, niisama vehkida ei saa) , oled tapnud 15 inimest oled manslayer1 30 manslayer 2 jne, ühesõnaga kohutav, kui võrrelda diablo 2ga siis diablo 2=morrowind, rpg elemente mängus äärmiselt vähe, aga kellele meeldib väikeste rpg elementidega häkk änd shlä see võib seda mängida, graafikal pole viga tegelikult, 6/10
