Wie heißt es doch so schön, wer Fußball mag, wird "Pro Evolution Soccer 4" lieben. Das Spiel das möglicherweise sogar "FIFA" vom Fußballthron stoßen könnte hat es besonders eilig, in Eure heimische Stube zu kommen und so wurde der Releasetermin, bis jetzt zumindest für die PS2, vorgezogen.

Ursprünglich durften wir mit einer Veröffentlichung der PS2-Version am 30. Oktober rechnen, aber Konami hat sich besonders ins Zeug gelegt und nun steht der potenzielle "FIFA"-Killer schon am 25. Oktober im Laden.

Xbox- und PC-Besitzer müssen sich dagegen noch etwas gedulden, bis auch sie die Männer mit den Stollenschuhen über den Rasen schicken dürfen. Releasetermin der Xbox- und PC-Version ist nämlich erst am 30. November.

Konami of Europe confirms pan-European launch date for the PlayStation 2 version of its footballing legend

Konami of Europe has announced the PlayStation 2 version of its eagerly-awaited Pro Evolution Soccer 4 will be released on October 15th. Versions for Xbox and PC-DVD will follow in November.

The release of Pro Evolution Soccer 4 is rightly seen as one of the high points of the gaming year. Each new installment delivers ever more realistic football action, and Pro Evolution Soccer 4 is easily the most accurate and intuitive football game for any system. The new game has also enjoyed a number of major additions, including the use of 56 clubs under the license from the Spanish and Dutch leagues and each club from the Italian league, and will also feature three of the game's most recognizable figures on its packaging, in the form of Premiership Golden Boot holder Thierry Henry and Italy's prolific front man, Francesco Totti. They are joined by Pierluigi Collina the internationally respected match official who also appeared on the packaging for Pro Evolution Soccer 4's predecessor.

"Each year, the Pro Evolution Soccer franchise gets bigger and bigger, and the launch of Pro Evolution Soccer 4 represents possibly the biggest advance for the series to date," commented Martin Schneider, European Marketing & PR Director for Konami of Europe. "The addition of licensed clubs, vastly improved gameplay, and its association with some of the biggest names in football in Henry, Totti and Collina prove how important it is to Konami, and we anticipate huge sales as eager fans queue for their copies on October 15th."

Realising you've forgotten the missus' birthday just as you hear her key in the door. Turning on CD:UK to the words, "Now here's Robbie Williams with his hip hop version of the Beatles classic, In My Life . Sharing a cell with a 20- stone tattoed murderer known as 'Anal' Arthur? Bah, pass the soap, big man. As far as were concerned, these nightmare scenarios are mere trifles compared to the definition of real fear; the possibility that Pro Evolution Soccer 4 might not be that good. Yes, weve been staring into the abyss for the past few weeks. The Japanese version of PES 4, Winning Eleven 8, arrived in August suffering from serious slowdown when a number of players were on-screen at the same time (corners were particularly problematic). Even the early UK preview code of PES4 retained this juddery framerate during crowd scenes. We were terrified. What if theyd broken PES? It didnt bear thinking about.

THE NEW RELIGION

And so it came to pass that we took possession of the first finished copy of PES4 in existence, hand shaking not only with the usual excitement, but with more than a little dread. Ten minutes, a 2-1 victory over Tim and all was alright with the world. PES4 is flawless footballing genius, a 10/10 masterpiece that runs rings around PES3. This is no cult anymore: this is the New Religion.

Where PES3 was a quantum leap in quality over PES2 thanks to a complete overhaul of the animation system, PES4 satisfies itself with refining all that was good about its predecessor. As in real football, passing is now the most important skill to master and you really have to work to retain possession passes are no longer magnetically drawn to the nearest teammate; you have to pick out a man and judge the pace of the ball rather than simply pressing X and letting the computer do the hard work. Dont worry though, this doesnt make things needlessly complicated, just more realistic, and if youre playing short passes to nearby teammates the one-touch stuff is more fluent than its ever been.

Player AI has also been taken to a new level of authenticy. Goal-poachers such as Van-Nistelrooy play off the shoulder of their marker, timing runs to perfection and sliping through the offside trap. Defenders, meanwhile, have tightened up their act, tracking back better and covering unmarked players rather than stubbornly sticking to their area of the pitch. And there are even more individuals who play in the exact style of their real-life counterparts Henry will drift out to the left and terrorise defences with his speed and dribbling , Sol Campbell is an absolute rock who wins everything in the air and dismissively lets attackers bounce off him, while Cristiano Ronaldo sends full-backs cross-eyed with his stepover flurries. But the most noticeable AI improvement is that players now overlap intelligently, finally enabling you to play winger and full-back properly in tandem carry the ball forward with Beckham, suck in the left-back, then bypass him with a through ball the Neviller whos sprinting past on the overlap ready for a cross into the box. It looks superb in action and adds a whole new dimension to your attacking options.

Stats play a much bigger part than before with player abilities now genuinely reflected out on the pitch. As proven by his displays in Englands WC Qualifiers, Alan Smith may be a hugely effective attacking pest but sometimes his control lets him down its the same in PES4. Smiths first-touch rating isnt great so occasionally youll see the ball frustratingly bouncing off him, gifting possession to the opposition. Everyone knows Scholesys tackling can be erratic to say the least, add that to his high aggression rating and you have a recipe for stupid lunges and a big collection of yellow cards. Give the ball to the Ginger Prince in the attacking third, on the other hand, and his superb shooting stats will see long-range salvos peppering the goal at a similar velocity to a chettah strapped to an Exocet missile. All the stats are just about spot on Keano has lost some pace, Shearer shields the ball doggedly, Pires falls over more than Stephen Hawking on a pogo stick.

TICKLE YOUR BELLY

While all these improvements help make PES4 even more realistic, theres one hige overriding change that takes the realism factor right up to 11. Recognising the fact that most football matches are tight affairs, usually with just a single goal separating teams, PES4s overall gameplay has been given a more competitive slant. Unless youre playing a vastly inferior team you can expect a real battle to get your nose in front and claim the three points. Scoring isnt easy, and nor should it be when the opposition are no mugs you cant expect them to lie down and let you tickle their belly with goals. Theyre going to fight for every ball, close down space, try to retain possession and attack with purpose. Put the game on the five-star difficulty level and even accomplished PES veterans will find it a real challenge (a six-star version which verges on the masochistic can be unlocked in the PES shop).

As far as were concerned this is a brilliant, and brave move by legendary producer Seabass and his team at Konami Tokyo. Many gamers just want to win matches and score loads of goals in the process (you can still do this on the lesser difficulty settings, of course) but PES has never been about casual arcade-style footie. This is the football fans football game and those of us who love Gods own game with a blind passion want to be able to turn on the PS2 and load a game that captures the eseence of football with unerring authenticy. And thats exactly what PES does. Sure, you may have to struggle through some gritty 0-0 draws, and youll occasionally lay siege to the oppositions goal for 80 minutes, fail to make that vital breakthrough, then fall victim to an injury time sucker punch. But having to strive to score goals and win games just makes it all the sweeter.

As ever there are a couple of traditional PES problems that still apply here. First off, the commentary by Peter Brackley and Trevor Brooking. Its definitely getting better (and its magnificent compared to the old Chuckle Brothers pairing of Chris James and Terry Butcher) but theres still lots of repetition and mistimed exclamations Hes given a penalty! just after youve put the ball out for a corner. In comparison to John Motson and Ally McCoists FIFA 2005 commentary, PES still has plenty of work to do in this department.

NO MORE ORANGES

Predictably, our second complaint is that PES4 still isnt fully licensed up. Again, there have been improvements, this time major ones like signing agreements with the Dutch, Italian and Spanish first divisions, enabling Konami to feature all their teams and players complete with their correct name. So you can stick two fingers up at Oranges 27 and wave hello to Jaap Stam at AC Milan, Edgar Davids at Inter and so on. But although this is welcome progress, there are still only 56 fully licensed teams within the games tally of 136 club sides, which doesnt look good alongside FIFA 2005s licence-flexing total accuracy. Our main gripe is that that British teams havent yet been signed up, resulting in Merseyside Blues (Everton), North London (Arsenal) and lots more daft monikers breaking PES4s spell of realism. Having said that, the vast majority of players (including the Brits) have their correct names, so the situation is nowhere near as bad as it used to be.

Course, neither of these problems has even the remotest bearing on the most important area gameplay. Out on the pitch, PES4 is in a league of its own. Weve tried to find something to moan about, we really have, its our job, but the quality of the football cant be faulted even the offside trap works perfectly now. Its rivals may be improving but that gap isnt getting any smaller. PES4 is Schmeichel in nets, Beckenbauer in defence, Maradona in midfield and Pele up front. Every area of the park, every aspect of football has been nailed. Next year theyll better it, somehow they always do, but for now PES4 is the greatest footie game of all time and a cast-iron must buy unless youre mad or depise football.

Denn wie Entwickler und Publisher "Konami" gestern bekannt gab, wurden zum heutigen Release insgesamt 1,5 Millionen Einheiten in den Handel gegeben. Damit schlägt der Nachfolger den Rekord seines Vorgängers. Woran das wohl liegen mag.

Ganz einfach, die Fangemeinde steigt von Teil zu Teil an und bestätigt damit die Erwartungen, die "Konami" in ihre Sport-Simulation stellt. Nach dem persönlichen Anspielen der japanischen Version "World Soccer Winning Eleven 8", will man nur sagen, dass die Vorfreude mehr als berechtigt ist. Denn spielt man dieses Spiel und hat den Sport rund um die 22 Männer/Frauen gern, wird man es so schnell nicht wieder weglegen wollen. Nie kam eine Fußball-Simulation so realistisch an den Sport heran und gerade hier bildet "Pro Evolution Soccer 4" eine Ausnahme, da jede Fortsetzung des Teils mit diesem Satz im Einklang steht. Doch helfen alle schönen Worte nichts, wenn man nicht selber in den Genuss des Spielens kommt. Und so kann nur jedem noch so kleinen Fußball-Fan empfohlen werden, dieses Game zu probieren. Das Spiel ist also ab heute im Handel erhältlich. Besitzer der "Pro Evolution Soccer"-Reihe sollten auch mal den Kollegen von pescorner.de einen Besuch abstatten, um die Informationen über das Game vollends abzurunden

Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 4 has displaced EA's FIFA 2005 from the top of the all-formats chart, racking up the third best sales week ever for any title in the UK and comfortably beating last week's FIFA 2005 figure.

While FIFA still has the advantage in overall sales thanks to being a multi-platform title, comparing the PS2 versions of the games shows that PES4 sold 50 per cent more this week than FIFA did in its launch week last week.

The Xbox and PC versions of Konami's title won't arrive until late next month, making it hard to make a direct comparison between the games - although on the basis of these figures, it certainly seems like Konami has closed the gap between the competing titles even further.

Pro Evolution Soccer 4 Hands-On

At a recent European press event, the majority of Konami's booth was predictably devoted to both the Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions of the next game in the company's extremely popular sports series: Pro Evolution Soccer 4. (The game will have been renamed Winning Eleven 8 by the time it makes the trip to North America.) Every year, fans of the long-running series wonder how KCET can possibly improve upon the game, and every year KCET manages it. 2004 doesn't look like it'll be an exception, either.

The area of the game that's received the most attention this year is definitely close control, which is now different for every player according to how skilled they are. For instance, some players will be able to turn with and shield the ball as it arrives at their feet; others will need to take the time to control the ball before they can attempt anything other than just running with it. However, during our short time with the game, we observed an even more-notable feature: the improvements that have been made to the game's artificial intelligence. The players on our team were making some exceptional runs off the ball at times, and when we had the opportunity to play against a computer-controlled opponent rather than another player, we found our opposition to be both believable and challenging.

The one feature in the previous game, Pro Evolution Soccer 3 (Winning Eleven 7 International in North America), that received some criticism was the game's implementation of the advantage rule--a rule that effectively allows the referee to let play continue if a team that has been on the receiving end of a foul retains possession of the ball. The real-life rule is often a subject of discussion for TV pundits and suchlike, and the decisions in Pro Evolution Soccer 3 were often even more controversial since they regularly allowed the offending team to regain possession of the ball within seconds of the advantage rule being played. In Pro Evolution Soccer 4, however, we witnessed referees playing the advantage rule on more than one occasion and subsequently awarding a free kick because no advantage was actually had by the team that was wronged. It sounds like a minor improvement, but its implications are actually quite significant.

Among the improvements that we didn't get to see in action, but which we were assured will be in place, were new options for set pieces, including chipped penalties and the ability to lay off a free kick to an adjacent player without the risk of sending it directly to an opponent. We look forward to bringing you more information on Pro Evolution Soccer 4 as soon as we're able to spend more time with the game.

As Publisher Konami admits now gave, the play starting from 19 November for the two platforms in the trade will be available. Thus the row in addition its on-line debut celebrates.

The step toward on-line ability is above all an answer to the desires of the numerous fans of 'Pro evolution Soccer'. The Xbox version uses Microsofts Xbox Live service, in order to make on-line Matches possible, and permits packing plays man counter man with 'Pro evolution Soccer'-Fans everywhere in the world. The PC version again supports both network plays and on-line Matches over TCP/IP connections and makes thereby plays possible man counter man also packing against an opponent connected via network or InterNet.
