First things first, this year’s actual production of the World Cup will not be native UHD/4K. It will be natively produced end-to-end in HDR however (HLG specifically, but broadcasters will convert to HDR10/HDR10+/Dolby Vision as they see fit). It is also being natively produced at 60fps (59.94Hz). So this means that the actual world feeds going to all broadcasters (there will be multiple feeds for each broadcaster to pick from) is sourced from a FHD/1080p60 HLG production source.

Many broadcasters worldwide will be making the games available in UHD p50/p60 (depending on local region standard) in some flavor of HDR format, but the resolution will be from an upscale of the FHD production mix. The frame rate conversion process is also generally performed using high-end frame rate conversion hardware, such as that from GrassValley or InSync, so most viewers in 50Hz territories should not be able to distinguish any anomalies in terms of motion processing.

Even though the production mix won’t be performed at native UHD, this does not mean that viewing UHD won’t be worthwhile; the UHD feed is very likely to have the highest picture quality due to a higher bandwidth encoding in addition to the benefits of HDR. The reality is that with a tournament so vast in geographical scope (three countries, 16 cities, of which all camera feeds from the sites will be sent to a central hub in Dallas, TX for mixing), producing everything in native UHD was not a possibility, primarily due to cost and reliability. For previous World Cups, such as Qatar, FIFA’s HBS was able to use dark fiber connections from all host sites directly to their centralized hub, so native UHD production workflows were possible. But to do something similar for this Cup would have been prohibitive given the economics of things.

With that caveat out of the way… 😄 In terms of the ‘best’ available regions to watch the games at home? Top of mind it will likely be in countries where football is a highly prioritized past time and the matches will be airing at a time where audiences are likely to be available to watch. Brazil is one such country. While the country as a whole (and its citizens) may not have the best access to the games in UHD, Globo is the rights holder and will be going for bragging rights on their own platform as they will be competing with service providers who will also want to deliver a premium experience to their customers. Bein platforms in the middle east will also very likely be a good source for high quality feeds. In the States, we have Fox, which isn’t too bad, but generally not the best compared to other worldwide consumer transmissions either. Tbh, most platforms in the EU will likely be stingy with performance, based on previous experience.
