Google avas Vaikses ookeanis eriti jämeda kaabli - 60 Tb/s |
|
|

FASTER cable system is ready for service, boosts trans-Pacific capacity and connectivity
The 9,000-km submarine cable system linking Japan and the West Coast of the U.S. completes construction and is ready for service
Singapore, 29 June 2016 – FASTER, a consortium of six international companies, together with its supplier NEC Corporation, today announced that construction and end-to-end testing of a new trans-Pacific submarine cable system, the FASTER cable system, has been successfully completed and will start service on 30 June 2016.
Mr Ooi Seng Keat, Vice President, Carrier Services of Singtel Group Enterprise said, “The completion of the FASTER cable system will provide capacity to support the expected four-fold increase in broadband traffic demand between Asia and North America. By adding network redundancy and ultra-low latency to our existing trans-Pacific cable systems, it reinforces our leadership in international data services in the region and enhances our infrastructure to support our customers’ critical data traffic.
“With a state-of-the-art design, the cable system provides continuous connectivity and sufficiently high capacity for cloud, video streaming, analytics and the Internet of Things, that will help spur innovation on both sides of the Pacific to stimulate the growth of the digital economy,” he added.
The 9,000-km FASTER cable system lands in Oregon in the United States and two landing points in Japan, namely Chiba and Mie prefectures. The system has extended connections to major hubs on the West Coast of the U.S. covering Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Portland and Seattle. The two landing points in Japan facilitate the cable’s easy access to major cities in Japan. FASTER’s robust and resilient connectivity to many neighbouring cable systems extend the cable’s capacity beyond Japan to other Asian locations.
FASTER is the first trans-Pacific submarine cable system designed to deliver 60 Terabits per second (Tbps) of bandwidth using a six-fibre pair cable across the Pacific.
“From the very beginning of the project, we repeatedly said to each other, ‘faster, Faster and FASTER’, and at one point it became the project name and today it becomes a reality. This is the outcome of six members’ collaborative contribution and expertise together with NEC’s support” said Mr Hiromitsu Todokoro, Chairman of the FASTER Management Committee.
“This was the first trans-Pacific submarine cable built solely by NEC Corporation, employing the latest 100Gbps digital coherent optical transmission technology. We are honored that the consortium entrusted us to build FASTER. Although we faced many challenges during the construction, I am truly glad that we were able to overcome these and to welcome this day,” said Mr Kenichi Yoneyama, Project Manager for FASTER at NEC’s Submarine Network Division. “This epoch-making cable will not only bring benefits to the United States and Japan, but to the entire Asia-Pacific region.”
Construction of the system was announced in August 2014 by the FASTER consortium, consisting of China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Global Transit, Google, KDDI and Singtel. |

Some basic information based on some of the questions I've read in this thread so far.
1) The cable is comprised of 6 fiber pairs. Each fiber pair has a Design Capacity able to transmit 100 wavelengths at a rate of 100Gb/s (10 Tb/s per fiber pair). This equates to 60 Tb/s for the cable. However, the cable is no where near equipped with that much data on day 1. There are probably anywhere from 2 to 10 wavelengths per fiber pair meaning 200 - 1000Gb/s.
2) The cable is designed to last for 25 years and will be upgraded over the course of its life by adding my wavelengths in increments of 100Gb/s until it reaches 100 x 100Gb/s per fiber pair. Though in practice, technology will improve in the future and they'll be able to squeeze even more data onto the cable.
3) Google owns one (or 2) fiber pair meaning it has a maximum capacity of 10 Tb/s. The other consortium owners probably own their own fiber pairs or have some sort of arrangement to share capacity.
4) Google does not use the cable (really better to say it's fiber pair) to generate revenue, per say. For Google, the fiber pair is infrastructure allowing them to have full control of data between their data centers. As others have pointed out, they do save money though by not having to buy capacity on someone else's cable.
5) Google partners with the other companies because the cable is common infrastructure. It only needs 1 lane (fiber pair) on a 6 lane highway; however, there are high up-front costs to install these cables but the incremental adder to add a fiber pair is small comparatively.
6) The 60Tb/s is not theoretical. It is real and demonstrated when the cable is point into service via what is called a Full Capacity Test.

Ja ometi...vaatamata kõigele on meie (st Eesti) ühendus aasiasse ulmeaeglane. Näiteks mingi jaapani või hiina lehe kuvamiseks läheb palju kauem aega, kui austraalia lehe kuvamiseks.
Tuleb üks 1000 Tb/s kaabel tõmmata läbi venemaa jaapanisse

RCC, tead ju väga hästi, et need on "törts" erinevad asjad.
Ühe projekti taga sajad miljonid kasutajad, teise taga hajaasustusega paar klienti, kes pealegi tõstavad kisa iga paari-eurose hinnatõusu üle

Noh nüüd on selge, miks inglased BREXIT-i poolt hääletasid. Kaabel maandub ju Prantsusmaal.
