Microsoft Will Pay $650 for Your MackBook Air If You Buy a Surface Pro 3

Microsoft has just launched a trade-in program for Apple users that calls for them to swap MacBook Airs for $650 (€480) store credit if they agree to purchase a Surface Pro 3.

Seeing the Redmond-based software giant launch a trade-in scheme for Apple users isn't surprising, as the company has already launched similar promotions for iPhone and iPad owners, again supposed to bring more customers to its own devices.

What's more, Panos Panay, the man in charge with the Surface division at Microsoft, compared the Surface Pro 3 with the MacBook Air during the New York press conference on May 20, referring to the new tablet as the right device to replace your laptop.

This time, Microsoft is offering up to $650 (€480) to MacBook Air owners who trade-in their laptops for a Surface Pro 3, with the company confirming that all models are part of this promotion. Of course, the trade-in value of the MacBook Air will drop depending on the Surface Pro 3 model you decide to purchase.

“Get up to $650 in store credit when you trade in select MacBook Air models and purchase a Surface Pro 3,” Microsoft said in a statement about the campaign which runs through July 31, 2014.

“Barely tipping the scales at 1.76 pounds, the new 12-inch Surface Pro 3 has all the power and performance of a premium laptop in a thin and lightweight design. It also comes with the all-new Surface Pen which delivers a natural writing and drawing experience,” it added.

The Surface Pro 3 comes with a 12-inch screen and features multiple CPU configurations, starting with an Intel Core i3 and ending with an i7. There are two memory options, namely 4 GB and 8 GB, and up to 512 GB of storage space depending on the version you choose.

Prices obviously vary by configuration, but here are all the official prices for the United States:

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 64 GB with Intel i3 - $799 (585 euros)
Microsoft Surface Pro 3 128 GB with Intel i5 - $999 (730 euros)
Microsoft Surface Pro 3 256 GB with Intel i5 - $1,299 (950 euros)
Microsoft Surface Pro 3 256 GB with Intel i7 - $1,549 (1,130 euros)
Microsoft Surface Pro 3 512 GB with Intel i7 - $1,949 (1,425 euros)

Today's trade-in promo is only available in Microsoft stores in the United States and Canada.
