  The game takes place on Mars once again after the events of its predecessor, Red Faction: Guerrilla, however since the ending of the third game the surface of Mars has become inhabitable after an unknown disaster. This has forced the surviving colonists to flee underground into the old abandoned mines which were built by their forefathers. As the colonists begin to adapt to life underground, they find that they are no longer the only life-forms on the planet of Mars as previously thought. These new alien creatures had been living within the underground caverns of Mars and thus never made contact with the colonists, however now they pose a threat to the colonists as they encroach on these alien's territory. The player once again takes the role of Alex Mason, the main protagonist of Red Faction: Guerrilla, a Mining engineer and leader of the "Red Faction" which consists of a group of Martian Colonists who had previously banded together and successfully fought against the Earth Defense Force for their freedom.
